iPhone XR Repairs: The Sensible One, and Still Going

The XR outsold both its expensive siblings and it is easy to see why. Aluminium frame instead of stainless steel, an LCD instead of OLED, one camera instead of two, and in exchange the best battery life of the entire generation. Seven years later there are still a great many in daily use.

Repair costs are now genuinely low. A screen is £55, and battery, back glass, camera and charging repairs are £45 each. For a phone still doing its job, those numbers make repair straightforward.

All work is carried out at our Essex repair centre with a twelve month warranty.

Screen Replacement (£55)

The XR uses an LCD panel, not the OLED fitted to the XS and XS Max of the same year. This trips people up constantly, and it matters because they are different parts at different prices. Make sure whoever quotes you knows which model you have.

LCD also fails differently to OLED:

• Cracks spreading from the impact point
• Dead areas where touch no longer registers
• White or bright blotches rather than black bleeding
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches registering without any input

That backlight symptom is worth knowing about. If your XR seems completely dead but you can just make out the screen when you shine a light at it, the phone itself is fine and only the backlight has failed. Battery Replacement (£45)

The XR had the best endurance of its generation, which is exactly why the decline feels so severe once the cell has aged. Owners who once got a day and a half now find themselves charging by lunchtime.

• Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
• Lasting a few hours where it once managed a day and more
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, worse in the cold
• Charge dropping in large steps rather than smoothly
• The phone feeling sluggish as well as short on charge

At £45 this is the single best thing you can do for an XR, and it restores the one quality that made people buy it in the first place. iOS also reduces peak performance when battery health is poor, so a replacement typically brings back responsiveness alongside endurance. Back Glass Replacement (£45)

Bonded rear glass, removed with a laser separator. The wireless charging coil sits directly behind the panel and will not survive a heat gun and prying tools, which is why we quote a fixed price where others will not touch the job.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lens from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• Wireless charging becomes unreliable or stops entirely
• Damage shows badly on the bright colours the XR shipped in

Charging Repair (£45)

Lightning port, seven years of daily insertions. The contacts wear, so the cable clicks in and feels secure while the connection has become unreliable. Charging that works when you press or angle the cable and stops when you release it is the classic symptom.

Before assuming that, expect years of compacted lint in the socket, which on phones this age is very often the whole problem. We clean and test before quoting. Camera Repair (£45)

A single rear lens keeps XR camera repairs simple and cheap. There is no telephoto or ultra-wide to complicate matters, so the diagnosis is usually straightforward.

• Cracked lens cover over an otherwise healthy module
• Blurry or soft images after a drop
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Focus hunting continuously without settling
• Rattling from a failed stabilisation assembly

Face ID Faults on Older Handsets

Face ID failures grow more common with age and the XR is now well into that territory. Refusing to enrol a new face, failing repeatedly in dim light, or reporting itself unavailable all point at the TrueDepth array behind the notch.

The honest position, and it matters most on phones of this value: Face ID is paired to the logic board at manufacture, so a damaged TrueDepth module cannot be replaced with one from another handset and made to work. A torn or disconnected flex cable can be repaired. We diagnose which you have and tell you plainly, because on an XR the difference decides whether the repair is worth doing at all.

Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted blind, and historic corrosion is extremely common after seven years. We will give you a straight view on whether the repair makes financial sense rather than taking your money to discover it does not. Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.

Turnaround, Warranty and Booking

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. Every eligible repair includes a 12 month warranty on parts and labour whatever the age of the handset. Faults relating to our work are put right at no cost. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
