The mini that people actually work on

The mini 5 found a particular audience: it fits where a full-size iPad does not. That matters for repairs in one specific way. Why the mini 5 is cheap to repair and the mini 6 is not

At £109 a screen, the mini 5 costs less than half what a mini 6 does. The reason is the panel: the mini 5 uses a conventional laminated LCD produced in reasonable volume, while the mini 6 packs a much higher pixel density into a panel made in far smaller numbers. Higher density and lower volume together push the part cost up sharply.

If you are choosing between the two second-hand, that difference in running cost is worth weighing alongside the purchase price. It rarely gets mentioned in comparisons and it can easily outweigh them over a few years of ownership.

Home button, Touch ID and one permanent limitation

Touch ID lives inside the physical home button here, and that button is paired to your specific logic board at the factory to prevent a stolen device being unlocked with a replacement part. In an ordinary screen repair we transfer your original button across and fingerprint unlock keeps working exactly as before.

Where the button assembly itself has been destroyed – usually a hard impact to the bottom edge, or liquid getting underneath it – a new one will still work as a home button but Touch ID cannot be restored by us or anybody else. We assess this before starting and tell you if yours is at risk, because it is not something anyone should discover after paying.

Apple Pencil 1, not Pencil 2

The mini 5 works with the first generation Apple Pencil, which charges by plugging into the Lightning socket rather than attaching magnetically. The Apple Pencil 2 is not compatible with this model – if yours will not stick to the side edge, nothing is broken and no repair can add the capability.

Because the Lightning socket takes both the charger and the Pencil, it sees more insertions than most. Change the cable before assuming the port has failed; cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports themselves do.

Battery replacement at £65

A mini is a tight package and the clearances inside are small, so the bonded cell has to be eased out slowly rather than levered – rushing it on a chassis this compact is how a technician causes damage that was not there before. After reassembly the iPad is charge-tested rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is the issue first. A worn cell handles reading and streaming and then drops sharply during video calls or a long working shift. If the iPad is instead simply slow, check how full the storage is – a nearly full device crawls regardless of battery health and clearing space costs nothing.

Charging faults: why minis suffer more

A mini spends far more of its life in a pocket, a flight bag or a tunic than a full-size iPad does, and compacted lint in the Lightning socket is correspondingly more common. Clearing it is not a chargeable job here. Change the cable first, then check the socket with a torch, and only after both is our £65 charging port repair the right answer.

Is it water resistant?

No. No iPad carries an IP rating and there are no seals inside this one. If liquid gets in, switch it off and do not connect a charger – power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable device becomes a dead one.
