The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra was Samsung’s attempt to build a tablet you could genuinely use instead of a laptop, and at 14.6 inches it remains one of the largest consumer tablets ever sold. It was also the first Galaxy Tab with a notch. Both of those things affect what a repair involves, and at £419 for a screen they are worth understanding before you commit.

A 14.6-inch panel is its own kind of problem

Size is the dominant factor in what this repair costs and how it is carried out. A display this large uses considerably more material, fails quality control more often during manufacture, and is far easier to stress during fitting than a small one. A bonded panel of these dimensions will crack if it is flexed even slightly out of plane while being seated.

It also changes how these tablets get damaged. An S8 Ultra is usually held two-handed, propped in a keyboard case or carried under an arm, and when one falls it tends to land on a long edge or a corner with a great deal of mass behind it. Frame deformation is more common here than on smaller Galaxy Tabs, and a new panel cannot bond flat to a frame that is no longer flat. Rest yours face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner – any rocking is worth telling us about before we order a part.

The notch, and what has to go back correctly

Samsung cut a notch into the top bezel to house the dual front cameras for landscape video calls. It was unusual on a tablet and it makes the panel a more intricate part than a plain rectangle, since the cutout is formed during manufacture rather than added later.

During a repair, the camera module in that cutout has to be transferred and re-seated precisely. A fraction out and you get a visible dark edge around the notch or a camera sitting proud of the glass – the sort of detail a rushed repair leaves behind and an owner then notices every single day.

No water resistance on the S8 series

Worth stating plainly because the S9 Ultra that replaced it is rated IP68 and can survive immersion. The S8 Ultra has no IP rating at all and no sealing designed for liquid, which puts it in the same position as any iPad.

If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and do not connect a charger – power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable device becomes a dead one. The S Pen across a very large screen

Samsung includes the S Pen, which works by electromagnetic resonance: a dedicated digitiser layer behind the display powers and tracks the pen, so it never needs charging to write. That layer sits separately from the capacitive touch layer your finger uses, and a screen replacement must leave both intact.

On a 14.6-inch panel this is harder to get right, not easier. A tablet can respond perfectly to fingers while the S Pen skips, offsets from the nib or loses pressure sensitivity several centimetres in from the edge, and there is a great deal of edge here. We test S Pen tracking, pressure response and corner accuracy before any S-series tablet goes back to its owner.

Green lines and AMOLED failure

A vertical green or pink line down the display is a known AMOLED failure rather than something you caused. It usually appears without warning, sometimes after a software update, and starts as a single faint line before others follow. No software fix exists. Check your Samsung warranty status first, because this may be covered – we would rather point you there than quote £419.

Battery and charging

The £65 battery is good value for a device this size. The cell is physically substantial and bonded across a wide area, so it has to be eased out patiently rather than levered, and the tablet is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

For charging faults, work through the free checks first. Change the USB-C cable, change the mains adapter and check its wattage, because a 14.6-inch tablet draws serious power and a small charger will show as connected while adding almost nothing. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. The £89 charging port repair comes last.

Check your microSD card

The S8 Ultra takes a microSD card, which no iPad does. Files saved to the card rather than internal storage are physically safe even if the tablet is not, and readable in any card reader straight away. It is the first thing to check when facing a device that will not switch on.
