At £99 for a screen replacement, the Galaxy Tab S7 is one of the best value premium tablets anyone can own. That figure looks like a mistake next to the £399 charged for the S7 Plus of the same year, and it is not – the two tablets use completely different display technology, and the S7 came out of that comparison very well indeed for anyone who eventually drops one.

£99 against £399: the LCD advantage

The Tab S7 uses an LCD panel while the S7 Plus uses Super AMOLED. AMOLED lights each pixel individually and gives the deeper blacks the Plus is known for, but it is a far more expensive component to make. That difference, and nothing else, accounts for a £300 gap in what a cracked screen costs to put right.

If somebody has quoted you a premium price for a standard Tab S7, they have either not established which model you own or they are not pricing it properly. Settings, then About tablet, gives you the model number in seconds and it is worth quoting when you get in touch.

The 120Hz screen you may not know you have

The Tab S7 was one of the first Android tablets with a 120Hz display, and it is genuinely noticeable – scrolling and S Pen work feel markedly smoother than on a conventional 60Hz panel. It is also the thing a careless screen replacement most often gets subtly wrong.

A replacement panel can look perfect on a static home screen and then stutter when you scroll a long page. After any screen repair on this tablet, ours or anybody’s, scroll something long and text-heavy and watch for judder, then draw a slow diagonal corner to corner with a finger and check the line is unbroken. Those two tests take fifteen seconds and catch most poor fittings. We run them before returning a device, but it is worth knowing how to check.

A screen that cannot develop green lines

There is a second advantage to the LCD panel that rarely gets mentioned. AMOLED displays are prone to a well-documented failure where a vertical green or pink line appears down the screen, often spontaneously and sometimes after a software update, requiring a full panel replacement. An LCD simply cannot fail that way.

Between that and the £300 saving on a cracked screen, the display reviewers were mildly disappointed by in 2020 has turned out to be the more sensible one to live with.

The S Pen and the layer beneath your screen

Samsung includes the S Pen with the Tab S7, and it works by electromagnetic resonance – a dedicated digitiser layer behind the display powers and tracks the pen, which is why it needs no charging to write. That layer is separate from the capacitive touch layer your finger uses, and a screen replacement must leave both working.

This is where cheap repairs come unstuck. The tablet responds perfectly to fingers, then the S Pen skips, sits slightly offset from the nib, or loses pressure sensitivity near the edges. We test S Pen tracking, pressure response and corner accuracy before any S-series tablet leaves us, and if you write or sketch on yours it is a fair question to put to any repairer.

Battery replacement at £65

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the tablet is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. On a device that remains this capable, £65 is an easy decision when the battery is genuinely the problem.

Confirm that it is. A worn cell handles reading and streaming perfectly well and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming, DeX sessions or long S Pen work. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the tablet just feels sluggish, check how full the storage is first – a nearly full device behaves slowly whatever the battery is doing, and clearing space costs nothing.

No water resistance on the S7 series

The Tab S7 carries no IP rating. Samsung did not bring water resistance to its tablets until the S9 range, so this one has no sealing designed for liquid, exactly like every iPad ever made.

If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and do not connect a charger. Running power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable tablet becomes a dead one. Charging faults: check these first

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains adapter and check its wattage, because a tablet this size will show as connected to a small phone charger while gaining almost nothing. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £59 charging port repair the right answer.

Your microSD card may be your backup already

The Tab S7 takes a microSD card, which no iPad does. Files saved to the card rather than internal storage are physically safe even if the tablet is not, and readable in any card reader immediately. It is the first thing worth checking when facing a device that will not switch on.
