The cheapest S Pen tablet, and what that means for repairs

Samsung includes the S Pen with the S6 Lite, and it is the same electromagnetic resonance system used across the S-series: a dedicated digitiser layer behind the display powers and tracks the pen, so it needs no charging and never dies mid-lecture. Apple has never included a Pencil with anything, and no comparably priced tablet from anyone offers pressure-sensitive input as standard.

For repairs, that layer is the thing that matters. It sits separately from the capacitive touch layer your finger uses, and a screen replacement has to leave both working properly. This is exactly where a cheap repair fails: the tablet responds perfectly to fingers, and then the S Pen skips, sits slightly offset from the nib, or loses pressure sensitivity near the edges. If you are choosing a tablet for a student or for anything that will live in a rucksack, running cost is worth weighing alongside specification, and few devices come out of that comparison as well as this one.

A screen that cannot develop the green line fault

AMOLED displays are prone to a documented failure where a vertical green or pink line appears down the panel, often spontaneously and sometimes after a software update, requiring a full replacement. An LCD cannot fail that way. It is a small, real advantage of the panel Samsung chose here.

Battery replacement at £65

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the tablet is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled. On a device this affordable and this useful, £65 is easy arithmetic when the battery is genuinely the issue.

Check that it is. A worn cell handles reading and streaming and then drops sharply during video calls or a long note-taking session. If the tablet is instead simply slow, look at how full the storage is first – these ship with modest capacity, fill up quickly, and a nearly full device crawls regardless of battery health. Clearing space costs nothing and resolves that complaint more often than people expect.

Charging faults: cable, adapter, lint

Change the USB-C cable, then the mains adapter, then look into the socket with a torch. Compacted lint stopping the cable seating fully is the single most common cause on a tablet that lives in a school bag or rucksack, and clearing it is not a chargeable job here. No water resistance
