The letters stand for Fan Edition, and Samsung’s approach was to keep the big 12.4-inch screen and the included S Pen while economising elsewhere – most significantly on the display panel itself. That decision is why a screen replacement here costs £139 rather than the £399 charged for the S7 Plus.

A big screen at a small screen’s repair price

The S7 FE uses an LCD panel rather than the Super AMOLED fitted to the S7 Plus. AMOLED lights each pixel individually and produces deeper blacks, but it costs far more to manufacture. Samsung’s compromise on the FE was to keep the size and drop the panel technology.

The result is unusual and worth appreciating: you get a 12.4-inch tablet that costs £139 to re-screen, when comparably sized premium tablets run to several hundred. If a big screen is what you wanted and pixel-level contrast was never the point, the FE is one of the most economical large tablets to live with.

The failure mode your screen cannot have

There is a second advantage that rarely gets mentioned. AMOLED displays are prone to a well-documented fault where a vertical green or pink line appears down the screen, often spontaneously and sometimes after a software update, requiring a full panel replacement. An LCD cannot fail in that way.

Between that and the repair cost, the panel reviewers treated as the FE’s main compromise has turned out to be the more sensible one to own.

The S Pen is included, and a repair must protect it

Samsung ships the S Pen in the box with the S7 FE, which is a large part of its appeal for students and note-takers. It works by electromagnetic resonance: a dedicated digitiser layer behind the display powers and tracks the pen, which is why it needs no charging and never runs out mid-lecture.

That layer is separate from the capacitive touch layer your finger uses, and a screen replacement has to leave both working. This is where inexpensive repairs fail. The tablet responds perfectly to fingers, and then the S Pen skips, sits slightly offset from the nib, or loses pressure sensitivity towards the edges – and on a 12.4-inch panel there is a lot of edge. We test S Pen tracking, pressure response and corner accuracy before any S-series tablet leaves us.

Battery replacement at £65

The S7 FE carries a large cell to drive a large screen, bonded across a wide area, so it has to be eased out patiently rather than levered – force on a chassis this size risks creasing the panel. The tablet is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Before booking, confirm the battery is the problem. A worn cell manages reading and streaming perfectly well and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or a long S Pen session. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the tablet simply feels slow, check the storage first, because a nearly full device behaves sluggishly whatever the battery is doing and clearing space costs nothing.

Large tablets take drops differently

A 12.4-inch tablet carries considerably more mass than a small one and concentrates the force of a fall into whichever corner lands. Frame deformation is more common on tablets this size, and a new panel cannot bond flat to a frame that is no longer flat.

If yours has been dropped, rest it face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn. Any rocking is worth mentioning before we order a part, because a screen fitted to a bent chassis sits proud, flexes under pressure and cracks again – sometimes within weeks.

No water resistance on this model

The S7 FE carries no IP rating. Samsung did not bring water resistance to its tablets until the S9 range, so there is no sealing designed for liquid here, exactly as with any iPad. If liquid gets in, switch it off and do not connect a charger – power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable device becomes a dead one. Charging faults: free checks first

Change the USB-C cable, then the mains adapter, and check its wattage – a tablet this size will show as connected to a small phone charger while gaining almost nothing. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £59 charging port repair the right answer.
