No fingerprint sensor, and that is by design

Samsung removed the physical home button on the Tab S4 and, rather than moving the fingerprint reader elsewhere, dropped it altogether. Unlocking relied on face recognition and iris scanning through the front camera array instead. It was an unusual choice even at the time and Samsung reversed it the following year with the Tab S6.

So if face unlock has become unreliable on yours, the cause is almost always the front camera or the lighting rather than a broken sensor – the S4 has no fingerprint hardware to fail. Clean the front camera glass and try again in better light before assuming anything needs repairing. It is free and it resolves the complaint more often than people expect.

Why a Tab S4 screen costs £299

The panel is Super AMOLED, which lights each pixel individually rather than using a backlight, and it remains one of the better displays fitted to any tablet of its era. It is also expensive to manufacture, which is the whole explanation for the price.

That figure needs weighing honestly against the tablet’s age. A £65 battery on a Tab S4 that still does what you need is straightforwardly worth doing – these remain perfectly capable for video, browsing, documents and S Pen note-taking. A £299 screen on a device this old is a genuine decision, and we will give you our honest view rather than simply taking the booking. If the numbers do not work, we will say so.

Green lines and AMOLED failure

A vertical green or pink line appearing down the display is a documented AMOLED failure mode rather than damage you caused. It often arrives spontaneously, sometimes after a software update, and typically starts as one faint line before others join it. There is no software fix; the panel itself has failed.

On a tablet of this age that is worth knowing before you spend anything, because it turns a working device into a £299 decision rather than a small repair.

The S Pen and what a repair must preserve

Samsung included the S Pen with the Tab S4, and it works by electromagnetic resonance – a dedicated digitiser layer behind the display powers and tracks the pen, which is why it never needs charging to write. That layer is separate from the capacitive touch layer your finger uses, and a screen replacement has to leave both working.

It is where cheap repairs fail. The tablet responds perfectly to fingers, and then the S Pen skips, sits offset from the nib, or loses pressure sensitivity near the edges. We test S Pen tracking, pressure response and corner accuracy before any S-series tablet leaves us.

Battery replacement at £65

These are now several years into service, and batteries are by far the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the tablet is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

Check the battery is genuinely at fault first. A worn cell manages reading and streaming and then drops sharply under real load. If the tablet is simply slow, that is more likely age, software and full storage than the cell, and a new battery will not change it – we would rather tell you that than take the booking.

No water resistance

The Tab S4 carries no IP rating and has no sealing designed for liquid. If liquid gets in, switch it off and do not connect a charger, because running power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable tablet becomes a dead one. Charging faults on an older tablet

Change the USB-C cable first – after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the adapter, then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to universal on a tablet of this age and which we clear at no charge. Check your microSD card before writing it off

The Tab S4 takes a microSD card. Anything saved to it rather than internal storage is physically safe even if the tablet is not, and readable in any card reader immediately. Is a Galaxy Tab S4 still worth keeping?

For settled, specific uses, often yes. The AMOLED screen still looks better than a good deal of what is sold new today, and the hardware remains comfortable with video, browsing, documents and S Pen note-taking. As a bedside video player, a kitchen screen, a second display or a dedicated note-taking device it can genuinely earn its keep for years yet, and £65 for a battery to achieve that is fair money.

What we will not claim is that it keeps pace with current software. A tablet of this age no longer receives the newest features, and some applications have stopped supporting devices this old and will not update. If your use is settled that may never affect you at all. If you need current apps, a repair here is money aimed at the wrong problem, and we would rather tell you that before you spend it than after.
