The standard Pixel 2 avoided the display problems that dogged its larger sibling. The Pixel 2 XL panel was widely reported for blue shift and early screen burn, but the smaller Pixel 2 used a different display and largely escaped both. It was also the first Pixel without a headphone socket.
Did the Pixel 2 have the same screen problems as the Pixel 2 XL?
Largely no, and it is worth knowing if you have been reading about that generation. The Pixel 2 XL was widely reported for colours shifting blue at an angle and for developing screen burn unusually early, to the point Google extended its warranty. The smaller Pixel 2 used a different panel and mostly avoided both problems.
That said, any OLED panel this old can develop burn eventually. If you can see a faint permanent ghost of the navigation bar on plain backgrounds, that is screen burn. It cannot be repaired, only replaced, and at £75 a Pixel 2 screen is one of the cheapest on our list.
How much does a Google Pixel 2 screen replacement cost?
A Google Pixel 2 screen replacement costs £75 at iExpert Repairs. It is an OLED panel bonded beneath toughened glass and replaced as a complete assembly, because the glass and display are laminated together.
- Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
- Dead zones where the touchscreen no longer registers
- Green, pink or white vertical lines down the panel
- Black or discoloured patches spreading over several days
- A faint permanent ghost of the navigation bar, which is screen burn
See our Google Pixel screen repair page for the process.
Is a Google Pixel 2 still worth repairing?
It depends what it needs, and on a phone this old you deserve a straight answer.
- A £59 battery on a working Pixel 2 is worth doing and transforms it
- A £55 charging repair is worth checking, because it is often just lint and free
- A £75 screen is cheap enough to be reasonable if the phone is otherwise sound
- Two repairs together is where it becomes marginal
- Liquid damage is not economic to repair on a Pixel 2
The Pixel 2 stopped receiving Android updates years ago. It still works as a phone and the camera remains surprisingly good, but a growing number of apps will not install on it and banking apps in particular are likely to refuse. It makes a decent second phone or a camera, and we would rather you spent with that expectation.
How much is a Google Pixel 2 battery replacement?
A Google Pixel 2 battery replacement costs £59 at iExpert Repairs and is usually completed the same day. On a phone of this age it is nearly always the only repair worth doing, and it is the one that makes it usable again.
- Capacity noticeably below where it started, shown under Settings, Battery
- Lasting only an hour or two on ordinary use
- Shutting down without warning, particularly in cold weather
- Charge collapsing in very large steps
- The phone feeling very slow as well as short on charge
Rule out software before paying for hardware. Our guide on why a phone battery drains so fast covers the checks, and our Google Pixel battery replacement page lists pricing.
Does the Pixel 2 have a headphone socket?
No. The Pixel 2 was the first Google phone to remove the headphone socket, which was a notable and unpopular change at the time. Wired headphones need a USB-C adapter or USB-C headphones.
That has one practical consequence at repair time: the USB-C port is doing double duty for charging and audio, so it gets used more than on a phone with a separate socket. If your headphones cut out while charging still works, or audio drops when the cable is moved, that points at the port rather than the headphones.
Why is my Google Pixel 2 not charging?
Most Google Pixel 2 handsets that will not charge do not need a new port. On a phone this old expect a USB-C socket completely packed with compacted lint, and clearing that is not a chargeable repair at iExpert Repairs. A genuine Pixel 2 charging port repair costs £55.
Change the cable and mains plug first, because worn cables cause more of these faults than broken ports do and on a phone worth what a Pixel 2 is worth today, paying for a repair you never needed is a bad outcome. See why a phone will not charge, and our Google Pixel charging repair page.
Does a Pixel 2 screen replacement affect the fingerprint reader?
No. The Google Pixel 2 has its fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, so a screen replacement cannot affect it and no screen protector can interfere with it. If yours has stopped responding, re-register the fingerprint and check a thick case is not sitting proud of the sensor.
Can a water damaged Google Pixel 2 be repaired?
Rarely economically. On a handset of this age and value, liquid damage costs more to put right than the phone is worth, and we will say so immediately rather than charging a diagnostic to reach the same conclusion.
What is worth doing is phone data recovery, because a phone this old very often holds photographs that exist nowhere else. See our phone water damage repair page.
How long does a Google Pixel 2 repair take?
Most Google Pixel 2 repairs are completed within one to three hours in store on the same day, and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned by tracked delivery, with most customers receiving the phone within two to three working days. Send-back postage is free and Klarna is available at checkout.
Where can I get a Google Pixel 2 repaired?
iExpert Repairs repairs Google Pixel 2 handsets at our Essex repair centre and by post for customers across the whole of the United Kingdom. Free send-back delivery is included on every mail-in repair, so wherever you are in the country the phone comes back to you tracked and at no extra cost.
Every eligible repair includes a 12 month warranty on parts and labour. Call 07939 990557 or contact us to book, and see our Essex repair centre page for more about how we work.
We also repair the Pixel 2 XL, Pixel XL and Pixel 3, with every model on our Google Pixel repairs page.
Pixel 2 Repairs: Honest Answers
Did the Pixel 2 suffer the same screen problems as the Pixel 2 XL?
Largely no. The Pixel 2 XL was widely reported for colours shifting blue at an angle and for early screen burn, and Google extended its warranty in response. The smaller Pixel 2 used a different panel and mostly escaped both issues. Any OLED this old can eventually develop burn, but the Pixel 2 was not affected the way its larger sibling was.
Does the Pixel 2 have a headphone jack?
No. The Pixel 2 was the first Google phone to remove the headphone socket, which was an unpopular change at the time. Wired headphones need a USB-C adapter or USB-C headphones. It also means the USB-C port handles both charging and audio, so it gets more use than on a phone with a separate socket and wears accordingly.
Is a Pixel 2 worth repairing?
On a battery, often yes at £59. The screen at £75 is cheap enough to be reasonable too if the phone is otherwise sound. Where it stops adding up is two repairs at once, or liquid damage. It also stopped getting Android updates years ago, so a growing number of apps will not install and banking apps are likely to refuse.
My Pixel 2 headphones cut out but charging works. What is wrong?
That usually points at the USB-C port rather than the headphones. Because the Pixel 2 has no separate headphone socket, the charging port handles audio as well, so a partially worn port can pass power while failing to carry a clean audio signal. Try a different adapter first to rule that out, then bring it in and we will test the port properly.
Does a cracked Pixel 2 screen affect the fingerprint sensor?
No. The sensor is on the back of the phone rather than under the display, so a cracked or replaced screen cannot affect it. If yours has stopped responding, re-register the fingerprint and check that a thick case is not sitting proud of the sensor and stopping your finger reaching it squarely.
Can you get photos off a Pixel 2 that will not switch on?
Very often, yes, and on a phone this old that is usually the more useful service. Handsets from this era are the most likely to hold photographs that exist nowhere else, because cloud backup was far from universal then. Bring it in and we will tell you honestly whether recovery or repair makes more sense.
