The 2018 iPad Pro was the biggest redesign in the iPad’s history. It dropped the home button, introduced Face ID, switched from Lightning to USB-C and added the magnetic Apple Pencil that charges on the side edge. Every one of those changes affects how the device is repaired, and one of them – the flat-edged chassis – is the reason we always check the frame before quoting.

The 2018 bending question, answered honestly

This generation attracted attention shortly after launch because some units arrived with a very slight bend in the aluminium. Apple’s position was that a small degree of flex was a by-product of the cooling process during manufacture and did not affect function. Whatever you make of that, the practical point for repairs is unchanged: a screen has to bond flat to the frame, and a frame that is not flat causes problems.

Before we order a panel for one of these, we check the chassis. You can do a rough version at home – rest the iPad face-down on a genuinely flat table and press each corner in turn. If it rocks, tell us. A new screen fitted to a bent frame sits proud at one corner, flexes under pressure and cracks again, sometimes within weeks. That is the outcome we most want to help you avoid.

Face ID and screen replacement on iPad

Face ID survives a screen replacement on this model. Unlike iPhone, where the TrueDepth system is deeply entangled with the display, the iPad Pro keeps its Face ID array as a separate module in the bezel. We transfer it across to the new panel and it continues working normally.

What does need attention is the ambient light sensor and True Tone calibration. A screen fitted without properly restoring those leaves you with a display that no longer adapts to room lighting, which is subtle but immediately noticeable to somebody used to it. We check both before the device goes back.

Apple Pencil 2 and the magnetic edge

This was the first iPad where the Pencil attached magnetically to the side and charged there, and that edge needs to survive any repair intact. If your Pencil has stopped charging when attached, check the flat side edge is clean and free of case debris before assuming a hardware fault – a build-up along that strip is a common and free fix.

After a screen replacement we test Pencil tracking into all four corners as well as magnetic charging. Edge tracking is what a rushed repair gets wrong: a digitiser can respond perfectly to fingers in the middle of the panel and still read a Pencil inconsistently near the margins.

The first USB-C iPad

Moving from Lightning to USB-C made this the first iPad that could charge from the same brick as a laptop, and USB-C connectors are physically more robust than Lightning ever was. That changes where faults come from. A genuinely broken port is less common here than on older iPads, while cable failures and underpowered adapters are more common causes of “it will not charge”.

Work through the free checks first: change the cable, change the mains adapter, then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Our £75 charging port repair is the last answer, not the first.

Battery replacement at £75

These are now several years old and batteries are the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive strips that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Check the battery is really the culprit before booking. A worn cell copes with reading or streaming and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or sustained Pencil work. At £75 on a device still worth several times that, it is an easy decision if that is the pattern you are seeing.

Is a 2018 iPad Pro still worth repairing?

For most owners, comfortably. It still handles everything a general-purpose tablet is asked to do, it takes the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil 2, and at £159 a screen it is far cheaper to put right than any current Pro. The point where it stops adding up is several faults at once, particularly if the frame is bent as well – and we will tell you that rather than quoting for all of them.
