How to tell the 2020 model from the 2018 one

Look at the rear camera housing. The 2020 model has three openings: a wide lens, an ultra-wide lens, and a small black circle which is the LiDAR scanner. The 2018 model has a single lens and no LiDAR. That is the fastest reliable check and it needs no software.

If you want to be certain, Settings, then General, then About gives you the model outright. It is worth confirming before you get a quote from anywhere, because a display assembly ordered against the wrong generation either does not fit or does not behave correctly, and the delay while the right part is sourced is entirely avoidable.

The LiDAR scanner and what it means for repairs

LiDAR measures distance by timing reflected light, and it sits in that small circle beside the camera lenses. It is not part of the display and a screen replacement does not touch it. But it is worth knowing it exists, because damage to the rear glass around the camera housing can affect it, and augmented reality apps behaving oddly after a rear impact usually points there rather than at the screen.

If you use measuring or AR applications and they have become unreliable after a drop, mention it when you contact us. It is the kind of fault people do not think to report because they assume it is a software problem.

Face ID, Pencil and what a screen replacement preserves

Face ID is a separate module in the bezel on iPad rather than being bonded into the display as it is on iPhone, so it transfers to the new panel and keeps working. We also restore ambient light sensing and True Tone calibration, which a hurried repair frequently leaves broken and which you notice immediately if you are used to it.

The Apple Pencil 2 attaches and charges magnetically on the flat side edge. After a screen replacement we test Pencil tracking into all four corners as well as magnetic charging, because edge behaviour is what a cheap repair gets wrong. A digitiser can respond perfectly to fingers in the middle of the panel and still read a Pencil inconsistently near the margins.

Battery and charging

At £75 the battery is the repair most of these will eventually need. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly. Before booking, watch behaviour under load — a worn cell manages reading and streaming and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or Pencil work.

For charging faults, work through the free checks first. Change the USB-C cable, change the mains adapter, and check the wattage, because an underpowered brick can show as connected while adding almost nothing. Check the frame before ordering a screen

Flat-edged iPad Pros deform rather than shatter when they land badly, and a bent chassis is the single most common reason a screen repair fails afterwards. A new panel needs a flat frame to bond to; fitted to a bent one it sits proud at a corner, flexes under pressure and cracks again.

Rest the iPad face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn. Any rocking means the frame has moved. Tell us before we order anything, because finding out after you have paid is exactly the outcome we want to avoid for you.

Is a 2020 iPad Pro still worth repairing?

For most people yes. It remains a capable machine for everything short of the heaviest creative work, it supports the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2, and at £169 a screen it is a fraction of what a current Pro costs to fix. Is the iPad Pro water resistant?
