How we protect your data?
The 9.7-inch iPad Pro from 2016 has a quiet claim to fame: it was the first Apple product of any kind to ship with a True Tone display, the feature that adjusts colour temperature to match the light in the room. It is also the cheapest iPad Pro on our repair list, with a screen replacement at £125.
How much does an iPad Pro 9.7-inch (2016) repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Screen replacement – £125
- Battery replacement – £65
- Charging port repair – £65
- Diagnostic service – £15
Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £15 diagnostic covers faults outside this list and includes a fixed quote before any work begins.
True Tone, and why it matters after a screen repair
True Tone uses an ambient light sensor to shift the display’s white balance towards the colour of the light around you, so a page looks like paper under warm lamplight rather than glowing blue. Once you are used to it, a screen without it looks noticeably cold.
This is exactly the thing a rushed screen replacement loses. Restoring True Tone after fitting a new panel requires the calibration data to be handled properly, and plenty of repairs simply skip it – the screen works, touch responds, and the customer discovers weeks later that the display no longer warms up in the evening. We check True Tone and ambient light sensing before any device goes back. If you are comparing quotes elsewhere, it is a fair question to ask.
The cheapest iPad Pro screen we fit
At £125 this is the lowest iPad Pro screen price on our list, which makes the repair decision considerably easier than on larger or newer Pros. A £65 battery on a device that still does its job is straightforward, and even the screen sits within the range where most owners conclude it is worth doing.
Where it stops adding up is several faults at once. A screen, a battery and a port together on a device of this age takes you past the point of sense, and we will say so rather than quoting for the lot.
What this iPad still does well
Being honest about the limits helps. The hardware remains comfortable with reading, video, browsing, documents and the first Apple Pencil, and its size makes it a genuinely pleasant device to hold. What it will not do is run the newest software features, and some applications have stopped supporting devices this old and will no longer update.
That is age rather than a fault, and no repair changes it. If your use is settled – a particular app, a particular purpose, a kitchen or studio fixture – it may never affect you at all.
Apple Pencil 1 and the Lightning socket
This was the first small iPad to support an Apple Pencil, and it uses the first generation one, which charges by plugging into the Lightning port. It does not work with the magnetic Apple Pencil 2 – if yours will not attach to the side edge, nothing is broken and no repair can add the capability.
That socket handles both the charger and the Pencil, so it sees more insertions than most. Change the cable before assuming the port has failed though; Lightning cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports themselves, and after this many years most originals are well past their best.
Battery replacement at £65
After this long in service, batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason these arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.
Check the battery is the problem first. A worn cell handles light reading and then drops sharply under any real load. If the iPad is simply slow instead, that is age and software rather than the cell, and a new battery will not change it – we would rather tell you that than take the booking.
Smart Connector: a free thing to check
The 9.7-inch Pro carries a Smart Connector on its edge, three small contacts that power and communicate with a Smart Keyboard. If yours has stopped being recognised, clean those contacts before assuming a fault. Years of pocket lint, dust and grease across them is a very common cause and costs nothing to fix.
Is it water resistant?
No. No iPad Apple has made carries an IP rating, and there are no seals inside this one. If liquid gets in, switch it off and do not connect a charger – running power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable device becomes a dead one. Our iPad water damage repair service covers this, and where a board cannot be saved we can often still attempt data recovery to retrieve what was on it.
How long does a 9.7-inch iPad Pro repair take?
Battery and charging work is usually same-day once the device is with us. Screen replacement takes longer because the bonded assembly has to come out cleanly and True Tone calibration and Pencil tracking are checked afterwards. We confirm timing with the fixed quote and start only when you approve it.
Where can I get a 9.7-inch iPad Pro repaired?
iExpert Repairs handles 9.7-inch iPad Pro repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK by tracked, insured post. contact us to arrange it or to get an honest view on whether it is worth doing.
We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair on every iPad generation, and handle other brands under tablet repair. Our iPad repair page lists every model we support.
What if the repair is not worth doing?
On a device this age that is a real possibility, and we would rather raise it than avoid it. A screen, a battery and a charging port all at once on a 2016 iPad takes you well past the point where the arithmetic works, and there is no version of that conversation where we quote for all three and hope you do not run the numbers yourself.
What often matters more than the iPad is what is stored on it. Notes, drawings and photographs that were never backed up can frequently be recovered even from a device that will never be used again, and on hardware at this price that is regularly the thing genuinely worth paying for. Ask us about data recovery before writing it off, and we will tell you honestly which route makes more sense.
9.7-inch iPad Pro Repairs: Questions Answered
What is True Tone and can a repair break it?
True Tone uses an ambient light sensor to shift the display's white balance towards the colour of the light around you. This iPad was the first Apple product ever to have it. A rushed screen replacement frequently loses it - the screen works, touch responds, and weeks later you notice the display no longer warms up in the evening. We check it before any device goes back.
Is this really your cheapest iPad Pro screen?
Yes, at £125 it is the lowest iPad Pro screen price on our list, which makes the decision easier than on larger or newer Pros. A £65 battery on a device that still does its job is straightforward. Several faults at once is where it stops adding up, and we will say so rather than quoting for the lot.
What can a 2016 iPad Pro still do?
It remains comfortable with reading, video, browsing, documents and the first Apple Pencil, and its size makes it pleasant to hold. What it will not do is run the newest software features, and some apps have stopped supporting devices this old. That is age rather than a fault and no repair changes it.
Why will my Apple Pencil 2 not stick to this iPad?
Because this model uses the first generation Pencil, which charges by plugging into the Lightning socket rather than attaching magnetically. The Pencil 2 was never compatible. Nothing is broken, and no repair can add the capability - that requires a 2018 model or later.
My Smart Keyboard has stopped working. Is that a repair?
Often it is free. Clean the three Smart Connector contacts on the edge first, because years of pocket lint, dust and grease across them is a very common cause. If they are clean and the keyboard is still not recognised, that is worth investigating properly.
My iPad is slow - will a new battery fix it?
Probably not, and we would rather tell you that than take the booking. Slowness on a device this age is software and app demands rather than the cell. A genuine battery fault behaves differently: fine during light reading, then dropping sharply under any real load.
