iPad Air 1 (2013) Repair

The original iPad Air from 2013 was the moment the full-size iPad stopped being heavy. Apple cut a third of the weight off the previous model and gave it the slim side bezels that defined every iPad since. It also has one characteristic worth knowing before you get a quote anywhere: it has no fingerprint sensor at all.

The Air 1 has no Touch ID – and that is normal

The first iPad Air shipped without a fingerprint sensor. Touch ID reached the iPad line the following year with the Air 2 and the mini 3, so an original Air has a plain home button and nothing else.

We mention it because people buying one second-hand occasionally conclude the fingerprint reader is broken, or assume a previous repair disabled it. Nothing is broken. The hardware never had one, and no repair can add it. If fingerprint unlock matters to you, you need an Air 2 or later.

Two screen prices, and how to tell which you need

The Air 1 uses a non-laminated display, so the outer glass with its touch layer is a separate physical component from the LCD behind it, with a small air gap in between. That works in your favour after a drop.

Crack the glass while the picture underneath stays perfect and only the digitiser needs replacing, at £65. Damage the LCD as well – dark blotches, lines, wrong colours, no image – and it becomes the £79 full screen. Test it yourself: switch the iPad on in a dim room and look past the cracks at the image quality alone. It takes ten seconds and it is a £14 difference, which is worth having on a device at this price.

Is an original iPad Air still worth repairing?

Honestly, only for particular uses. These are now well over a decade old, and while the hardware still handles video, reading and browsing, a good deal of current software will not install on them at all. As a dedicated reader, a kitchen screen, a video player for a child or a second display, one of these can still earn its keep, and a £65 battery to achieve that is fair money.

What we will not do is take £79 for a screen on a device you will find frustrating a fortnight later. If several things have failed, or if you need current apps, we will say plainly that the money is better spent elsewhere. That conversation costs nothing and it is the one worth having first.

Battery replacement at £65

After this long, the original cell will hold a fraction of its designed capacity, and batteries are by far the most common reason these still arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

Check the battery is genuinely the issue first. A worn cell manages light reading and then drops sharply under load. If the iPad is simply slow instead, that is age and software rather than the cell, and no repair changes it.

Charging faults on a decade-old Lightning socket

Change the cable before anything else. Lightning cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports do, and after this many years most original cables have quietly given up. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to universal on a device this old and which we clear at no charge. Is it water resistant?

No. No iPad Apple has ever made carries an IP rating, and there are no seals inside this one. If liquid gets in, switch it off and do not connect a charger – running power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable device becomes a dead one. What if it is beyond economic repair?

Then we say so rather than quoting for everything. On a device this old what is stored on it usually matters far more than the hardware, and photographs, notes and documents that were never backed up can frequently be recovered even from an iPad that will never switch on properly again. How long does an original iPad Air repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually same-day once the device is with us. Screen work takes a little longer, because the internal surfaces need to be genuinely clean before reassembly – dust trapped in the air gap of a non-laminated display shows as visible specks under the glass afterwards.

Buying a used original iPad Air? Three checks worth making

These turn up cheaply second-hand and most are honest, but three checks take a minute and tell you what you are getting. Switch it on in a dim room and look for uneven backlight patches or specks under the glass – both suggest a previous screen repair done without properly cleaning the air gap. Plug it in and confirm the Lightning socket holds the cable firmly rather than needing to be propped at an angle. And check how much free storage it has, because the 16GB version of this generation is effectively unusable today once the operating system has taken its share.
