The iPad Air 3 is the last of a particular kind of iPad: home button, Touch ID in that button, Lightning port, first generation Apple Pencil and a Smart Connector on the edge. Everything after it moved to flat sides and USB-C. If you like the older layout, this is the most modern iPad that still has it — and at £119 for a screen it is inexpensive to keep going.
How much does an iPad Air 3 (2019) repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Screen replacement — £119
- Battery replacement — £65
- Charging port repair — £65
- Diagnostic service — £15
Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list and includes a fixed quote before any work begins.
The home button, Touch ID and one permanent limitation
Touch ID lives inside the physical home button on the Air 3, and that button is paired to your specific logic board at the factory. It is an anti-theft measure: it prevents somebody unlocking a stolen iPad by fitting a replacement button.
In an ordinary screen repair we transfer your original home button across and fingerprint unlock continues to work exactly as it did. Where the button assembly itself has been destroyed — most often by a hard impact to the bottom edge, or liquid getting underneath it — a replacement will still function as a home button but Touch ID cannot be restored by anyone. That is the pairing rather than a limit on any repairer’s skill, and we tell you if yours looks at risk before starting.
A laminated screen, and what that rules out
The Air 3 uses a fully laminated display, meaning the glass, digitiser and LCD are bonded into one assembly and replaced together. There is no cheaper glass-only repair on this model. That is worth stating because several older iPads — the 9th generation and earlier standard iPads, and the older minis — genuinely do have a separate digitiser and a much cheaper glass repair. People reasonably assume the same applies here. It does not.
If the picture beneath your cracks is clean and touch works across the whole panel, the damage is structural and you have time to decide. Keep an eye out for glass lifting or shedding, since open cracks let dust and moisture reach the display. Distorted colour, dead touch patches or spreading dark areas mean the assembly is damaged and waiting will not help.
Apple Pencil 1 and the Lightning socket
The Air 3 works with the first generation Apple Pencil, which charges by plugging into the Lightning port rather than attaching magnetically. It does not support the Apple Pencil 2 — if yours will not stick to the side edge, nothing is broken and no repair can add the capability.
Because the Lightning socket takes both the charger and the Pencil, it sees more insertions than most iPads. Even so, change the cable before assuming the port has failed. Lightning cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports themselves do, and after this many years most original cables are well past their best.
Smart Connector: check it before paying for anything
The Air 3 carries a Smart Connector on its edge, three small gold contacts that power and communicate with a Smart Keyboard. If yours has stopped being recognised, clean those contacts first. Years of pocket lint, dust and grease across them is a very common cause and costs nothing to resolve. If they are genuinely clean and the keyboard is still not detected, that is worth investigating properly.
Battery replacement at £65
Batteries are the most common reason these arrive with us now. The cell is bonded in with adhesive strips that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.
Confirm the battery is the issue before booking. A worn cell copes with reading and streaming and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or a long Pencil session. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the iPad merely feels slow, check how full the storage is first — a nearly full iPad crawls regardless of battery health, and clearing space costs nothing.
Is an iPad Air 3 still worth repairing?
For most owners yes. It remains comfortable with browsing, video, documents, note-taking and the first Apple Pencil, it takes a Smart Keyboard, and its 10.5-inch laminated screen still looks good. At these prices a single repair is easy arithmetic. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will say so rather than quoting for all of them.
Is it water resistant?
No. No iPad Apple has made carries an IP rating, and there are no seals inside this one. If liquid gets in, switch it off and do not connect a charger — running power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable device becomes a dead one. Our iPad water damage repair service covers this, and where a board cannot be saved we can often still attempt data recovery.
How long does an iPad Air 3 repair take?
Battery and charging work is usually same-day once the device is with us. Screen replacement takes longer because the bonded assembly must come out cleanly and the home button needs careful transfer, followed by Pencil and Touch ID testing. We confirm timing with the fixed quote.

iPad Air 3 Repairs: Common Questions
Is the Air 3 the last iPad Air with a home button?
Yes. It is the final Air with a physical home button, Touch ID inside it, a Lightning port, first generation Apple Pencil support and a Smart Connector. Everything after it moved to flat sides and USB-C. If you prefer the older layout, this is the most recent iPad that still has it.
Will Touch ID keep working after a screen repair?
Yes, provided the original home button survives, which it usually does. That button is paired to your logic board at the factory, so we transfer your original across. If it was destroyed by a hard knock to the bottom edge or by liquid, Touch ID cannot be restored by us or anyone else — we flag that risk before starting.
Is there a cheaper glass-only repair for the Air 3?
No. This model uses a fully laminated display where glass, digitiser and LCD are bonded as one assembly. Several older iPads — the 9th generation and earlier standard models, and the older minis — genuinely do have a separate digitiser and a much cheaper glass repair, so the question is a fair one. It just does not apply here.
Why will my Apple Pencil 2 not attach to this iPad?
Because the Air 3 uses the first generation Pencil, which charges by plugging into the Lightning socket rather than attaching magnetically. The Pencil 2 was never compatible with this model. Nothing is broken, and no repair can add the capability.
My Smart Keyboard has stopped being recognised. Is that costly?
Often it is free. Clean the three Smart Connector contacts on the edge first — years of pocket lint, dust and grease across them is a very common cause. If they are genuinely clean and the keyboard is still not detected, that is worth investigating properly.
My Air 3 is slow. Would a new battery fix it?
Check the storage before spending anything, because a nearly full iPad crawls regardless of battery health and clearing space costs nothing. A genuine battery fault behaves differently: fine while reading or streaming, then dropping sharply during video calls, gaming or a long Pencil session.
