The iPad Air 2 was, for its moment, an extraordinary piece of engineering – the thinnest tablet in the world at launch, the first iPad with a laminated display, and the first Air to carry Touch ID. More than a decade later a great many are still working, and the questions people ask us about them are mostly about whether keeping one going still makes sense.

How much does an iPad Air 2 (2014) repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Glass-only (touch) replacement – £65
  • Full screen replacement – £109
  • Battery replacement – £65
  • Charging port repair – £65
  • Diagnostic service – £15

Each covers the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £65 glass-only option applies where the display underneath is undamaged; if you are unsure which you need, the check below settles it.

Which screen repair do you actually need?

The distinction is worth understanding, because it is a £44 difference. Switch the iPad on, take it into a dim room and deliberately ignore the cracks, looking only at the picture behind them. Is the image clean, evenly lit and the right colour right across the panel?

If yes, the display itself has survived and the cheaper £65 glass repair is likely to be all you need. If you can see dark blotches, lines, colour shifts, patches of dead touch or no picture at all, the display has been damaged too and it becomes the £109 full screen replacement. Tell us what you see when you get in touch and we will tell you which you are looking at rather than defaulting to the higher figure.

The first laminated iPad

The Air 2 was where Apple removed the air gap between the glass and the display, bonding them together. It made the screen look like the image was painted onto the surface rather than sitting beneath it, and it is a large part of why these still look good today next to far newer tablets.

It also made them thinner and, unavoidably, more delicate. There is less material between a dropped iPad and its internals than there was on the original Air, which is why corner impacts on an Air 2 more often damage the display and not just the glass.

Touch ID and the home button

This was the first iPad Air with a fingerprint sensor, built into the physical home button. That button is paired to your logic board at the factory to stop a stolen device being unlocked with a replacement part. During a screen repair we transfer your original button across and Touch ID continues working as before.

If the button assembly itself has been destroyed – a hard impact to the bottom edge, or liquid getting underneath – a new one will still work as a home button but Touch ID cannot be restored by anybody. We check and tell you before starting rather than after.

Is an Air 2 still worth repairing?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on what you use it for. These remain perfectly good as a reading device, a kitchen recipe screen, a video player, a music stand or a child’s first tablet, and a £65 battery or glass repair to keep one in that role is reasonable money.

What we will not pretend is that a decade-old iPad runs current software. Some apps have stopped supporting devices of this age and will no longer update, and no repair changes that. If you need current software, a repair here is money aimed at the wrong problem. If your use is settled, it may never affect you at all.

Battery replacement at £65

After this many years the original cell will hold a fraction of what it once did, and batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason these reach us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly.

Confirm the battery is the problem first. A worn cell handles light reading and then drops sharply under any real load. If the iPad is instead simply slow, that is age and software rather than the cell – a new battery will not change it, and we would rather say so than take the booking.

Charging faults: cable before port

Change the Lightning cable first. Cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports themselves fail, and after a decade most original cables are long past their best. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to universal on a device this old and which we clear at no charge. Our £65 charging port repair comes last.

What if it is not worth repairing?

Then we tell you. Several faults at once on an iPad this age takes you past the point where the arithmetic works, and we will not quote for all of them and hope you do not run the numbers. What is stored on the device often matters more than the device – photographs and notes never backed up can frequently be recovered even from a machine that will never be used again. Ask us about data recovery before writing it off.

How long does an iPad Air 2 repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually same-day once the device is with us. Screen work takes longer because the home button has to be transferred carefully and a laminated assembly of this age needs patient handling. We confirm timing with the fixed quote and start only when you approve it.

iPad Air 2 Repairs: Honest Answers

How do I know whether I need the £65 or the £109 screen repair?

Switch the iPad on in a dim room and ignore the cracks entirely, looking only at the picture behind them. Clean, evenly lit and the right colour across the whole panel means the display survived and the cheaper glass repair is likely enough. Dark blotches, lines, colour shifts or dead touch patches mean the full screen replacement.

Is a decade-old iPad Air 2 worth repairing?

It depends what you use it for. These remain perfectly good as a reading device, kitchen recipe screen, video player, music stand or a child's first tablet, and £65 to keep one in that role is reasonable. What we will not pretend is that it runs current software - some apps no longer support devices this age.

Why does the Air 2 screen still look good after all this time?

It was the first iPad with a laminated display, meaning Apple removed the air gap between the glass and the panel and bonded them together. The image looks painted onto the surface rather than sitting beneath it, which is why these still hold up next to far newer tablets.

Will Touch ID work after a screen repair?

Yes, provided the original home button survives. The Air 2 was the first Air with a fingerprint sensor, and that button is paired to your logic board at the factory, so we transfer your original across. If it was destroyed by a hard knock or by liquid, Touch ID cannot be restored by anybody.

My old iPad will not charge. Is the port dead?

Change the Lightning cable first. Cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than ports do, and after a decade most originals are well past their best. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is nearly universal on a device this old and which we clear at no charge.

What if my Air 2 is beyond economic repair?

We tell you rather than quoting for everything and hoping you do not run the numbers. What is stored on it usually matters more than the device itself - photographs and notes never backed up can frequently be recovered even from a machine that will never be used again. Ask us about that before writing it off.
