The iPad Air 5 is, for a lot of people, the best value Apple has ever offered in a tablet. It put the M1 – the same processor Apple was shipping in MacBooks – into an Air costing a fraction of an iPad Pro. That single fact is why repairing one almost always makes sense.
How much does an iPad Air 5 (2022) repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Screen replacement – £165
- Battery replacement – £69
- Charging port repair – £79
- Diagnostic service – £15
Each covers the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with nothing added at the end. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list and includes a fixed quote before any work starts.
An M1 for £165 a screen
Repair decisions usually turn on whether the device will still be useful in a few years. On the Air 5 that question answers itself. The M1 was fast enough to run desktop-class applications at launch and has not aged into slowness – the ceiling people hit on an M1 iPad is software, not silicon.
So a £165 screen or a £69 battery here is not propping up something near the end of its life. It is maintaining a machine that will still be perfectly capable well into the 2030s. Compared with a current iPad Pro, where a screen alone runs into the hundreds, the Air 5 is one of the most sensible pieces of Apple hardware anyone can own from a running-cost point of view.
Touch ID lives in the top button
The Air 5 puts its fingerprint sensor inside the power button rather than on the display, and that button is cryptographically paired to your logic board at the factory. The purpose is anti-theft: it stops somebody unlocking a stolen iPad by fitting a fresh button.
For repairs, this means we transfer your original button across during a screen replacement and Touch ID keeps working exactly as before – the outcome in the overwhelming majority of cases. Where the button assembly itself has been destroyed by the impact or by liquid, a replacement will still power the iPad on and off but fingerprint unlock cannot be restored by anyone. We tell you if yours looks at risk before we start, not afterwards.
Laminated display: no cheap glass-only option
The Air 5 uses a fully laminated display, so the glass, digitiser and LCD are bonded into a single assembly and replaced together. There is no cheaper glass-only repair on this model, and a quote promising one should be treated with real suspicion. Some older iPads genuinely do have a separate digitiser and a much cheaper glass repair, which is why people reasonably ask.
If the picture beneath your cracks is clean and touch works everywhere, the damage is structural and you have time to decide. Watch for glass lifting or shedding though – open cracks let dust and moisture reach the panel and turn a tidy job into a messier one. Distorted colour, dead touch patches or spreading dark areas mean the assembly itself is damaged and waiting will not help.
Apple Pencil 2 and the magnetic edge
The Air 5 takes the Apple Pencil 2, which attaches and charges magnetically on the flat side. If yours has stopped charging when attached, check that edge is clean and free of case debris before assuming a fault – a build-up along the magnetic strip stops the Pencil seating properly and costs nothing to resolve.
After a screen replacement we test magnetic charging and Pencil tracking into all four corners. Edge tracking is exactly what a cheap replacement assembly gets wrong while still passing an ordinary touch test, and it is the fault people discover weeks later rather than in the shop.
Battery replacement at £69
At £69 this is good value on a device of this capability. The cell is bonded in with adhesive strips that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.
Before booking, confirm the battery is the problem. A worn cell handles reading and streaming perfectly well and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or sustained Pencil work. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the iPad merely feels slow, that is worth diagnosing rather than assuming – an M1 does not become slow with age.
Charging faults: three free checks first
Change the USB-C cable. Change the mains adapter and check its wattage, because an underpowered brick can show the iPad as connected while adding almost nothing, which presents exactly like a hardware fault. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Only when all three come back clean is our £79 charging port repair the right answer.
How long does an iPad Air 5 repair take?
Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the device reaches us. Screen replacement takes longer because the bonded assembly has to come out and go back cleanly and the Touch ID button needs careful transfer, followed by Pencil and True Tone testing. We confirm timing with the fixed quote and start only once you approve it.
Where can I get an iPad Air 5 repaired?
iExpert Repairs handles M1 iPad Air repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK through a tracked, fully insured mail-in service. You do not need to be local. contact us to arrange it or to describe the fault first.
We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair across every iPad generation, offer data recovery where a device cannot be economically saved, and handle other brands under tablet repair. Our iPad repair page lists every model we support.
Is the iPad Air water resistant?
No iPad Apple has ever built carries an IP rating of any kind, and the Air 5 is no exception – no seals, no gaskets, no official liquid protection at all. It catches people out because modern iPhones shrug off spills, and because a flat device on a desk or kitchen counter is exactly where a knocked-over drink lands first.
If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and do not connect a charger. Pushing power through a wet board is the single most common way a recoverable iPad becomes a dead one, and it is the mistake we see more than any other. Leave it off, get it to us quickly, and let a proper clean happen before corrosion establishes itself. Our iPad water damage repair service covers exactly this, and where a board cannot be saved we can usually still attempt data recovery.
iPad Air 5 (M1) Repairs: Common Questions
Is an M1 iPad Air worth repairing?
Almost always. The M1 was the same processor Apple shipped in MacBooks and it has not aged into slowness - the ceiling people hit is software rather than silicon. A £165 screen or £69 battery maintains a machine that will still be capable well into the 2030s rather than propping up something near its end.
Will Touch ID survive a screen replacement?
In the overwhelming majority of cases yes. The sensor sits in the top power button, which is paired to your logic board as an anti-theft measure, and we transfer your original across. Only where that button was itself destroyed by the impact or by liquid is fingerprint unlock unrecoverable, and we tell you beforehand if that looks likely.
Can I have just the glass replaced?
No. The Air 5 uses a fully laminated display where glass, digitiser and LCD are bonded into one assembly, so everything is replaced together. Some older iPads do have a separate digitiser and a genuinely cheaper glass repair, which is why people ask - but a quote promising one for an Air 5 should be treated with suspicion.
My Apple Pencil has stopped charging on the side edge. Is it broken?
Check the magnetic strip is clean and free of case debris first - a build-up stops the Pencil seating properly and is a common, free fix. If it is clean and still will not charge, that is worth investigating, but it is not where we would start.
My screen is cracked but everything works. How urgent is it?
Not immediately, though do not leave it for months. A clean picture with full touch response means structural damage rather than electrical. Watch for glass lifting or shedding, because open cracks let dust and moisture reach the panel and turn a tidy repair into a messier one.
My iPad Air feels slow. Would a new battery help?
Probably not, and we would rather say so than take the booking. An M1 does not become slow with age, so sluggishness is worth diagnosing properly. A genuine battery fault looks different - fine while reading or streaming, then collapsing during video calls, gaming or sustained Pencil work.
