The iPad Air 4 was a bigger change than its name suggested. Apple threw out the old rounded-edge design, removed the home button, moved Touch ID into the power button for the first time on any device, switched to USB-C and added support for the magnetic Apple Pencil 2. Almost everything about repairing an Air changed with this model.

How much does an iPad Air 4 (2020) repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Screen replacement — £159
  • Battery replacement — £69
  • Charging port repair — £65
  • Diagnostic service — £15

Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with no assessment fee added afterwards.

The first device with Touch ID in the power button

The Air 4 was where Apple solved a problem it had created by removing home buttons: how to keep fingerprint unlock on a device without a Face ID array. The answer was to shrink the sensor into the top button, and this iPad was the first product anywhere to use it.

That button is cryptographically paired to your logic board at the factory, which stops somebody unlocking a stolen iPad by fitting a fresh one. In an ordinary screen replacement we transfer your original button across and Touch ID keeps working exactly as before. Where the button assembly itself has been destroyed by the impact or by liquid, a replacement will still power the device on and off but fingerprint unlock cannot be restored — by us or anyone else. We assess that before starting and tell you if yours is at risk.

Flat edges changed how these break

The Air 4 traded the old curved back for flat aluminium sides. It looks better and it feels more solid in the hand, but flat-edged iPads deform rather than shatter when they land badly, and a bent chassis is the most common reason a screen repair fails weeks after it was done.

Rest the iPad face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn. Any rocking means the frame has moved, and we need to know before ordering a panel. A new screen bonded to a bent frame sits proud at one corner, flexes when pressed and cracks again — that is the outcome we most want to help you avoid.

Apple Pencil 2 and the magnetic edge

This was the first Air to take the Apple Pencil 2, which attaches and charges magnetically on the flat side. If yours has stopped charging when attached, check that edge is clean and free of case debris before assuming a hardware fault — a build-up along the magnetic strip stops the Pencil seating properly and costs nothing to fix.

After a screen replacement we test magnetic charging and Pencil tracking into all four corners. Edge tracking is precisely what a cheap replacement assembly gets wrong while still passing an ordinary touch test, and it is the fault people find weeks later rather than in the shop.

Laminated display: no glass-only shortcut

The Air 4 uses a fully laminated display, so the glass, digitiser and LCD are bonded into a single assembly and replaced together. There is no cheaper glass-only repair on this model. Some older iPads genuinely do have a separate digitiser and a much cheaper glass repair, which is why people reasonably ask — but a quote promising one for an Air 4 should be treated with suspicion.

If the picture beneath your cracks is clean and touch responds everywhere, the damage is structural and you have time to decide. Watch for glass lifting or shedding, since open cracks let dust and moisture reach the panel. Distorted colour, dead touch patches or spreading dark areas mean the assembly itself is damaged and delay will not help.

Battery replacement at £69

The cell is bonded in with adhesive strips that have to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. On a device still worth several times the repair cost, £69 is an easy decision if the battery is genuinely the culprit.

Confirm that it is. A worn cell manages reading and streaming perfectly well and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or sustained Pencil work. Sudden collapse under load is the giveaway. If the iPad simply feels slow, check how full the storage is first, because a nearly full iPad behaves sluggishly whatever the battery is doing.

The first USB-C Air

Moving from Lightning to USB-C made this the first Air that charged from the same brick as a laptop, and USB-C connectors are physically more robust than Lightning ever was. Genuine port failures are therefore less common here than on older iPads, while cable faults and underpowered adapters cause far more of the complaints we hear.

Change the cable, change the adapter and check its wattage, then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Our £65 charging port repair is the last conclusion rather than the first.

How long does an iPad Air 4 repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the device is with us. Screen replacement takes longer because the bonded assembly must come out cleanly and the Touch ID button needs careful transfer, followed by Pencil and True Tone testing. We confirm timing with the fixed quote and start only when you approve it.

Where can I get an iPad Air 4 repaired?

iExpert Repairs handles iPad Air 4 repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK by tracked, fully insured post. contact us to arrange it or to describe the fault first.

We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair across every iPad generation, offer data recovery where a device cannot be economically saved, and handle other brands under tablet repair.

What our 12 month guarantee covers

Every repair we carry out on an iPad Air 4 is guaranteed for 12 months on the part and the workmanship alike. If a replacement screen develops dead touch zones, a colour fault or a panel lifting at an edge during normal use, it comes back to us and we put it right at no cost to you. A fresh drop is a new accident rather than a failed repair, and we would rather say that plainly than bury it in the small print.

What matters more than the guarantee is not needing it. That is why digitiser coverage to all four corners, Apple Pencil tracking, magnetic charging, Touch ID and True Tone are all checked before an iPad leaves us. Catching a problem in the workshop costs us an hour; catching it a fortnight later costs you your device for a second time.

iPad Air 4 Repairs: Questions Answered

Was the Air 4 really the first device with Touch ID in the power button?

Yes — it was the first Apple product anywhere to use it, solving the problem of keeping fingerprint unlock on a device with no home button and no Face ID array. That button is paired to your logic board at the factory, which is what stops a stolen iPad being unlocked with a replacement.

Can Touch ID be restored if the power button is destroyed?

No. A replacement will still power the iPad on and off, but fingerprint unlock cannot be brought back by us or anyone else. In an ordinary screen repair the original button survives and we transfer it across, so Touch ID keeps working. We assess the risk before starting rather than after.

How do I check whether my Air 4 is bent?

Rest it face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn. Any rocking means the chassis has deformed. Flat-edged iPads bend rather than shatter when they land badly, and a new panel bonded to a bent frame sits proud, flexes and cracks again — so tell us before we order one.

My Apple Pencil will not charge on the side edge. What should I check?

Clean the magnetic strip first and make sure no case material is covering it. A build-up along that edge stops the Pencil seating properly and is a common, free fix. If it is clean and still will not charge, that is worth investigating, but it is not where we would start.

Is there a cheaper glass-only repair for the Air 4?

No. This model uses a fully laminated display where glass, digitiser and LCD are bonded as one assembly, so everything is replaced together. Some older iPads do have a separate digitiser and a genuinely cheaper glass repair, which is why the question comes up — but not this one.

My iPad will not charge from my phone adapter. Is the port broken?

Usually not. USB-C connectors on this generation are robust, so cable faults and underpowered adapters cause far more of these complaints than port failures do. Change the adapter, change the cable, then check the socket for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge.
