M2 or M3? Check before you get a quote

Externally these two generations are near enough indistinguishable. Same finish, same button layout, same magnetic Pencil edge, same dimensions. The difference is inside, and it matters because a display assembly ordered for the wrong generation either does not fit or does not behave correctly once fitted.

Open Settings, then General, then About, and read the model number. That is definitive and takes seconds. Quote it to us when you get in touch and we can confirm the correct part and the correct price on the first conversation rather than the second. If you bought the iPad second-hand and the seller told you it was an M3, verify it anyway – this is one of the easiest devices to be honestly mistaken about.

What the M3 changes, and what it does not

The M3 brought hardware-accelerated ray tracing and a faster graphics architecture to the Air line for the first time. That is genuinely useful if you play graphically demanding games or run 3D and design work on the iPad. For email, streaming, note-taking and Pencil sketching, it makes no practical difference at all over the M2.

Why does that matter for a repair? Because it feeds directly into the repair-versus-replace question. If you use this iPad for the heavy work the M3 was built for, it is worth maintaining properly and a £349 screen is easily justified. If you use it lightly, the same is true for a different reason: a lightly used iPad will still be perfectly capable in six years, and keeping it running costs far less than replacing it.

Touch ID sits in the top button

Like every modern iPad Air, this model puts the fingerprint sensor inside the power button rather than on the display. That button is paired to your logic board at the factory, which prevents somebody unlocking a stolen iPad by fitting a new one. It also means that if the original button assembly is destroyed by a drop or by liquid ingress, Touch ID cannot be restored – a replacement button will still switch the device on and off, but fingerprint unlock is permanently lost.

In practice the button almost always survives, and we transfer the original across during a screen replacement so Touch ID keeps working normally. If we think yours is at risk, you will hear that from us before we start rather than after.

Laminated display, and what that rules out

The Air 7 uses a fully laminated LCD, so the glass, digitiser and panel are bonded into a single unit. There is no cheaper glass-only repair on this model, and a quote offering one is a signal to look elsewhere. Everything comes out and goes back together, which is exactly why the price sits where it does.

If the image beneath your cracks is clean and touch responds everywhere, the damage is structural and you can take your time deciding. Watch for glass lifting or shedding though, because open cracks let dust and moisture reach the panel and turn a straightforward job into a more involved one. Distorted colour, spreading dark patches or dead touch zones mean the assembly itself is damaged and waiting will not help.

Battery and charging

The £99 battery replacement covers a cell that is bonded in with adhesive strips which have to be eased out slowly rather than levered. Clearance above the logic board is tight on the Air, and that patience is most of what you are paying for. The iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply put back together.

For charging faults, exhaust the free options first. Change the USB-C cable, change the mains adapter, and check the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint – that last one is by far the most common cause of a cable that will not seat properly, and we clear it at no charge. Only when all three come back clean does a genuine £99 charging port repair make sense.
