The Galaxy Tab A8 is a family tablet in the truest sense: bought for the living room, used by everybody, and dropped by at least one of them. At £89 for a screen replacement it is inexpensive to put right, which is precisely why so many are still in service years after they were bought.

How much does a Galaxy Tab A8 repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Screen replacement – £89
  • Battery replacement – £65
  • Charging port repair – £59
  • Diagnostic service – £15

Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with nothing added at the end. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list and includes a fixed quote before any work begins.

There is no fingerprint sensor on the Tab A8

Worth saying early, because people hunt for one and conclude something has failed. The Tab A8 has no fingerprint reader anywhere – not in the power button, not under the display. Unlocking relies on a PIN, a pattern, or face recognition through the front camera.

So if face unlock has become unreliable, the cause is the front camera or the lighting rather than a broken sensor. Clean the camera glass and try again somewhere brighter before assuming anything needs repairing. It is free, and it resolves the complaint far more often than people expect on this model.

The A8 does not work with an S Pen

The other common misunderstanding across the Galaxy Tab A range. The S Pen works by electromagnetic resonance, which needs a dedicated digitiser layer built into the display at manufacture. Samsung’s S-series tablets have that layer; the A-series does not.

An S Pen bought for a Tab A8 will not work and no repair can make it work, because the hardware is not there to activate. If you want pressure-sensitive stylus input on a modest budget, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is the cheapest Samsung tablet that genuinely supports it. We would rather tell you that than take a booking to investigate a fault that does not exist.

Is an £89 screen worth it?

On a tablet that otherwise works, yes without much debate. It sits well below what a replacement costs, and you keep your apps, accounts, downloads and children’s games exactly as they are – which on a shared family device is worth more than people credit.

Where the arithmetic changes is two repairs at once. A screen and a battery together starts to approach what the tablet is worth, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for both and letting you discover it afterwards.

The torch test before you give up on it

If the A8 seems dead but still makes sounds, vibrates, or appears when connected to a computer, take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the screen at an angle. If the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the tablet. Everything on it is intact and you are looking at a screen repair, not a dead device.

It costs nothing and it rescues a surprising number of tablets that were otherwise headed for a drawer or a bin.

Battery replacement at £65

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the tablet is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. Family tablets get cycled hard – charged overnight, run flat daily – so batteries are one of the most common reasons these reach us.

Confirm the battery is the problem before booking. A worn cell handles reading and streaming and then drops sharply during video calls or games. If the tablet is instead just slow, check how full the storage is. These ship with modest capacity, fill quickly with apps and downloaded video, and a nearly full device crawls whatever the battery is doing. Clearing space costs nothing and fixes that complaint more often than a repair would.

Charging faults: the free checks come first

Change the USB-C cable, then the mains adapter, then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint. That last one is the most likely cause on a tablet that gets carried around a house and handed between people, and clearing it is not a chargeable job here. Only when all three come back clean is our £59 charging port repair the right answer.

No water resistance, and where these get wet

The Tab A8 carries no IP rating and no sealing designed for liquid. Family tablets live on sofas, kitchen tables and beds, which is exactly where drinks end up. If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and do not connect a charger – running power through a wet board is the single most common way a recoverable tablet becomes a dead one.

Leave it off, get it to us quickly, and let a proper clean happen before corrosion establishes itself. Our water damage repair service covers this, and where a board cannot be saved we can usually still attempt data recovery.

Check the microSD card first

The Tab A8 takes a microSD card, which no iPad does. Photographs, videos and documents saved to the card rather than internal storage are physically safe even if the tablet is not, and readable in any card reader immediately. It is the first thing worth checking when facing a device that will not switch on, and it matters most on affordable tablets whose owners are least likely to be paying for cloud backup.

How long does a Galaxy Tab A8 repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the tablet is with us. Screen replacement takes a little longer because the bonded assembly has to come out and go back cleanly. We confirm timing with the fixed quote and start only once you approve it.
