Galaxy Z Flip Repairs from £59

The original Z Flip mattered more than its sales figures suggest. It was the first clamshell of the modern folding era and the first phone to use ultra thin folding glass rather than plastic over the display, which is the technology every folding phone since has been built on.

Prices now reflect its age: folding main display £199, outer cover screen £89, battery £69, charging £59. For a phone people mostly keep out of affection or as a second handset, those are sensible numbers.

Galaxy Z Flip Main Screen Replacement (£199)

Despite the ultra thin glass underneath, the surface you touch is still a soft polymer layer, and it behaves like plastic rather than like the toughened glass on a conventional phone. It can be marked by a fingernail, a ring or a grain of sand.

• A vertical line at or near the crease, usually spreading
• A dead or flickering band across one half of the panel
• Black bleeding or ink-like blotches after pressure on the screen
• Touch responding on one half of the display but not the other
• A visible dent, puncture or bubble beneath the surface

The factory screen protector forms part of the display assembly. On a phone of this age it very often starts lifting at the edges, and pulling it off destroys the panel underneath. Galaxy Z Flip Outer Screen Replacement (£89)

The cover window on the original Flip is tiny, useful for the time, the date and little else. That has a practical consequence: owners open the phone for absolutely everything, so these hinges have done far more cycles than any later Flip of the same age.

• Cracks radiating from an impact point
• Dead areas where touch stops registering
• Coloured lines across the panel
• Black patches spreading over days
• Ghost touches occurring unprompted

The Hinge Gap and Why These Screens Fail

The original Z Flip does not close flat. It shuts with a visible gap, and there is no brush seal worth the name protecting the mechanism. Debris gets in freely.

Sand, crumbs, grit and pocket dust settle in the hinge, and closing the phone presses that debris straight into the back of the folding panel. One hard particle punctures it. The damage looks exactly like an impact, but the phone was never dropped. On this generation it is comfortably the most likely way the screen will fail.

• Never close the phone on anything, however small
• Keep it out of bags with loose keys, coins or cosmetics
• Take real care on beaches, and coastal areas are worst for it
• If the hinge feels gritty, stop closing it and bring it in
• Avoid folding it in freezing weather, when the polymer is most brittle

A hinge clean costs a fraction of a £199 display, and on a gapped-hinge Flip it is worth doing periodically rather than waiting for a failure.

Galaxy Z Flip Battery Replacement (£69)

Two separate cells, one in each half, reached through a full strip down. The original Flip had modest endurance when new, and years of charge cycles later this is almost always the repair it needs.

• Capacity dropping noticeably in Settings, Battery and device care
• Dead by early afternoon on ordinary use
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still on the meter
• Charge falling in large steps rather than smoothly
• One half of the phone noticeably hotter than the other

Galaxy Z Flip Charging Repair (£59)

On a phone this age expect years of compacted lint in the USB-C socket, which is very often the whole problem rather than a failed port. We clean and test before quoting.

Back Glass (£59) and Camera Repair (£69)

Water Damage

The original Z Flip has no water resistance rating whatever. Combined with an open hinge gap, that makes it genuinely vulnerable, and liquid damage on this generation tends to be serious.
