Galaxy Z Flip 5 Repairs, Folding Screen Included

The Flip 5 was the model that made clamshells genuinely useful, because it was the first with the large cover screen you can actually reply from without opening the phone. It also closed flat for the first time, which keeps grit out better than the earlier gapped hinges.

The folding main display is £259 and the outer cover screen is £99. Those are two entirely different repairs, so be wary of anyone quoting a single Flip screen price without asking which one you need.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Main Screen Replacement (£259)

The folding display has no toughened glass over it, because toughened glass will not bend. A soft polymer layer protects it instead, and it can be dented by a fingernail, a ring or a grain of sand.

• A vertical line at or near the crease, usually spreading
• A dead or flickering band across one half of the panel
• Black bleeding or ink-like blotches after pressure on the screen
• Touch responding on one half of the display but not the other
• A visible dent, puncture or bubble beneath the surface

The factory screen protector is part of the display assembly, not an accessory. Peeling it off destroys a lot of Flip screens, so if yours is lifting at the edges, leave it and bring the phone in. The crease is normal and not a fault. See our Samsung screen repair page for the range.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Outer Screen Replacement (£99)

The Flex Window introduced on this model is a proper cover display rather than the narrow strip on earlier Flips, so it does far more work and takes far more damage. It also spends most of its life face up on tables and worktops.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead areas where touch stops registering
• Coloured lines running across the panel
• Black patches spreading over days
• Ghost touches occurring unprompted

Fix it promptly so fragments do not reach the hinge. If it is failing with no impact behind it, read phone screen flickering.

What Actually Kills Flip Screens

Most ruined Flip displays were never dropped. A Flip closes onto whatever is sitting on its screen, and in a pocket or handbag that means sand, crumbs, grit, keys and make-up powder pressed straight into the folding panel. One hard particle punctures it.

• Never close the phone on anything, however small
• Keep it out of bags with loose keys, coins or cosmetics
• Take care on beaches, and coastal areas are worst for it
• If the hinge feels gritty, stop closing it and bring it in
• Avoid folding it in freezing weather

A hinge clean costs a fraction of a £259 display. If yours will not sit flush closed or feels rough, get it checked before the panel fails.

Hinge Wear and Closing Feel

The hinge is the part of a Flip doing work no other phone component does, and after a few years of daily opening and closing it starts to tell you so. Worth knowing what is normal and what is not.

• A hinge that has loosened and no longer holds mid-angle positions
• Grinding, crunching or gritty resistance through the fold
• The two halves no longer sitting flush when closed
• A visible gap appearing at the hinge end when shut
• Creaking that has appeared recently rather than always been there

A hinge that has simply gone slack is annoying but not urgent. One that feels gritty is urgent, because that grit is sitting where it will eventually be pressed into the folding panel. The same goes for a gap, which lets more debris in. Neither costs much to deal with, and both cost a great deal to ignore.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Battery Replacement (£65)

Two cells, one in each half, reached through a full strip down. Battery life is the standing complaint about clamshells, because folding in half leaves less internal volume than a conventional phone of the same screen size, so a healthy cell matters more here than on most handsets. On a Flip 5 this is usually the repair worth doing.

• Capacity dropping noticeably in Settings, Battery and device care
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still on the meter
• Charge falling in steps rather than smoothly
• The handset warm during light use
• One half noticeably hotter than the other

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Charging Repair (£59)

Most charging complaints are compacted lint in the USB-C socket stopping the cable seating, not a failed port. We clean and test before quoting.

Back Glass (£69) and Camera Repair (£69)

Camera work splits between cracked lens covers and failed modules. Blurred images, rattling from failed stabilisation, a black or crashing camera app, or one lens dead are the usual signs. Where nothing was dropped, phone camera not working covers software causes.

Water Damage

The Flip 5 has a water resistance rating, but a hinge cannot be sealed like a solid chassis, and water resistance is not dust resistance. On a phone several years old, treat both as degraded.
