Galaxy Z Fold 5 Repairs, Including the Inner Display

The Fold 5 was the generation where Samsung finally got the hinge to close flat, eliminating the wedge-shaped gap every earlier Fold had. That mattered for more than looks: a gapless hinge keeps far less grit out of the phone, and grit is what destroys folding screens.

Repairs on it are now well priced. The inner folding display is £399 and the outer cover screen is £169. We replace both in-house at our Essex repair centre, including the inner panel most shops will not touch.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 Inner Screen Replacement (£399)

The inner display has no toughened glass over it, because toughened glass will not fold. A soft polymer layer does the protecting, and it can be marked by a fingernail.

• A vertical line at or near the crease, usually spreading over days
• A dead or flickering band down one half of the panel
• Black bleeding or ink-like patches after pressure on the screen
• Touch working on one half of the display but not the other
• A visible dent, puncture or bubble beneath the surface

The screen protector on the inner panel is factory applied and part of the display assembly. Peeling it off is one of the most common ways owners destroy their own screen, so if yours is lifting, leave it and bring the phone in. Galaxy Z Fold 5 Outer Screen Replacement (£169)

Conventional glass bonded to an OLED panel, replaced as one assembly. The Fold 5 cover screen is narrow by modern standards, which makes it awkward to type on but also means it is the part of the phone most often used one-handed, and one-handed use is how phones hit pavements.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead areas where touch stops registering
• Coloured lines running down the panel
• Black patches spreading over several days
• Ghost touches occurring unprompted

Fix it promptly, because loose fragments migrate into the hinge. If the display is failing with no impact behind it, read phone screen flickering.

Hinge and Debris on a Fold 5

The flat-closing hinge introduced here genuinely helps, but it does not seal the phone. Sand, crumbs, grit and pocket dust still find their way in, and when the phone closes that debris is pressed into the back of the inner panel. One hard particle punctures it, and the damage looks like impact even though nothing was dropped.

• Never close the phone on anything, however small
• Keep it out of pockets holding keys or coins
• Take care on beaches, and coastal areas are worst for it
• If the hinge feels gritty or crunchy, stop folding it and bring it in
• Avoid folding in freezing weather, when the polymer layer is most brittle

A hinge clean costs a fraction of a £399 display. If yours no longer closes flush or feels rough through its travel, that is worth checking now.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 Battery Replacement (£65)

Two separate cells, one in each half, reached through a full strip down. On a handset now several years old this is usually the repair that makes the most difference.

• Capacity dropping noticeably in Settings, Battery and device care
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still showing
• Charge falling in steps rather than smoothly
• The handset warm during light use
• One half of the phone noticeably hotter than the other

Galaxy Z Fold 5 Charging Repair (£59)

Most Folds brought in for charging faults need the USB-C socket cleaning, not replacing. Compacted lint stops the cable seating fully and we check that first.

Genuine failure means charging at one angle only, cutting out when the phone moves, a loose connector, or charging that works while data transfer does not. Try a different cable and plug, then read why a phone will not charge. See Samsung charging repair for the work.

Back Glass (£69) and Camera Repair (£79)

Rear glass is bonded and laser separated, and worth fixing quickly so fragments do not reach the hinge. Our cracked back glass guide explains why home kits fail.

Camera repairs split between cracked lens covers and failed modules. Blurred images, rattling from failed stabilisation, a black or crashing camera app, or one lens dead while others work are the usual signs. Where nothing was dropped, phone camera not working covers software causes.

Water Damage

The Fold 5 carries a water resistance rating, but a hinge cannot be sealed like a solid chassis, and water resistance is not dust resistance. On a phone several years old, assume both have degraded.
