The original Pixel Fold was Google’s first folding phone, and it remains one of the few repairs most high street shops will simply refuse. We replace the inner folding display in-house. At £399 the screen costs more than the newer Pixel 9 Pro Fold at £389, for a reason worth explaining.
Why does the original Pixel Fold screen cost more than the newer model?
A Google Pixel Fold screen replacement costs £399, which is £10 more than the newer Pixel 9 Pro Fold at £389. That is not a mistake and it is not a premium for the older phone.
First generation folding panels were produced in far smaller quantities than the models that followed, and Google has long since stopped making them. Low volume parts for discontinued phones cost more per unit than current production parts, exactly as they do with car components. The newer Fold benefits from larger production runs and better aftermarket supply.
What goes wrong with a Pixel Fold inner screen?
The inner folding display has no toughened glass over it, because toughened glass cannot bend. A thin polymer layer protects it instead, soft enough to be marked with a fingernail, and on a first generation folding phone that layer is thinner than on later models.
- A vertical line appearing along or near the crease, which usually spreads
- A dead or flickering band down one half of the panel
- Black bleeding or ink-like patches after something pressed on the screen
- Touch working on one half of the display but not the other
- A visible dent, puncture or bubble under the surface layer

What actually destroys folding phone screens?
Not drops. Grit in the hinge. Sand, crumbs, keys and pocket dust work into the mechanism, and closing the phone presses that debris straight into the back of the inner panel. One hard particle punctures it, and the damage looks exactly like an impact even though the handset was never dropped.
On a first generation Fold this matters more than on newer models, because the hinge design and brush seals were less developed than the ones Google fitted afterwards.
- Never close the phone on anything, however small
- Keep it out of pockets or bags carrying keys or coins
- Take particular care on beaches and building sites
- If the hinge feels gritty or crunchy when folding, stop and bring it in
- Avoid folding it in freezing conditions, when the polymer layer is most brittle
- Never peel the factory-applied protective layer off the inner screen
That final point is the one that writes phones off. The protective layer on a folding inner display is part of the display assembly, not a shipping film. Peeling it off destroys the panel underneath. If yours is lifting at the edges, leave it and bring the phone in. A hinge clean costs a small fraction of £399, so a gritty hinge is worth dealing with before the panel fails.
