iPhone 12 Pro Max Repairs: The MagSafe Generation

The 12 series was a genuine turning point. Apple brought back flat edges, introduced Ceramic Shield on the front, and added the MagSafe magnet ring to the back. All three of those decisions affect how these phones break and how they get repaired, and the 12 Pro Max is where it all shows up most clearly.

Five years on, a screen for one is £95 and a battery £65. For a phone that still handles everything most people ask of it, that is a straightforward case for repairing rather than replacing.

Screen Replacement (£95)

A bonded OLED panel under Ceramic Shield glass, replaced as a single assembly. Ceramic Shield genuinely did improve drop resistance on this generation, but it made no difference to scratch resistance and none at all to what happens when a phone lands on a hard edge.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Unresponsive regions where touch no longer registers
• Green or pink vertical lines following a drop
• Dark bleeding spreading across the panel over days
• Ghost touch inputs occurring unprompted

The flat edges introduced with this generation are worth a word. They look sharp and feel good in the hand, but they concentrate impact force into a much smaller area than the curved edges of the 11 and earlier. That is why 12 series screens tend to crack from a single corner rather than shattering broadly.

Battery Replacement (£65)

At five years old, essentially every 12 Pro Max needs one. These handsets are almost always well past 80 percent capacity by now, and the difference a new cell makes on a phone this age is dramatic.

• Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still on the meter, worse in cold weather
• Charge dropping in jumps rather than smoothly
• The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge
• Warmth during undemanding use

iOS reduces peak performance on batteries in poor health to prevent unexpected shutdowns, so on a phone this age a £65 battery frequently restores responsiveness as well as endurance. Back Glass Replacement (£65)

Bonded rear glass with the MagSafe magnet array sitting directly beneath it, removed with a laser separator. That magnet ring is exactly why this repair needs the right equipment: heat and prying tools damage it, and a phone that no longer holds a MagSafe charger has lost a feature you paid for.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• MagSafe accessories stop attaching properly
• Wireless charging becomes intermittent

Charging Repair (£59)

Lightning generation, and after five years these ports have taken thousands of insertions. The internal contacts wear, so the cable still clicks in and holds firmly while the electrical connection has become unreliable. Charging that works when you press or angle the cable and stops when you release it is the classic symptom.

Before that, expect five years of compacted lint packed into the socket. On phones this old it is frequently the entire problem. We clean and test before quoting a port. Camera Repair (£65)

The 12 Pro Max carried a larger main sensor than the rest of its generation, and the array stands proud of the body, so the outer lens cover takes the impact when the phone lands face up.

• Cracked lens cover with the module beneath undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Rattling or grinding as optical stabilisation fails
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Telephoto or ultra-wide dead while the main lens works

Face ID and Front Sensor Faults

The TrueDepth array behind the notch drives Face ID, and on five year old handsets we see failures from wear and from liquid ingress owners have long forgotten. Refusing to enrol a new face, failing in low light, or reporting itself unavailable all point there.

Face ID is paired to the logic board at manufacture, so a damaged TrueDepth module cannot be swapped in from another handset and made to work. A torn or disconnected flex cable is repairable. We diagnose which you have before quoting rather than charging you to find out.

Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful starting points.

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days.
