iPhone 12 Pro Max Repairs: The MagSafe Generation
The 12 series was a genuine turning point. Apple brought back flat edges, introduced Ceramic Shield on the front, and added the MagSafe magnet ring to the back. All three of those decisions affect how these phones break and how they get repaired, and the 12 Pro Max is where it all shows up most clearly.
Five years on, a screen for one is £95 and a battery £65. For a phone that still handles everything most people ask of it, that is a straightforward case for repairing rather than replacing.
All work is carried out at our Essex repair centre with a twelve month warranty.
Screen Replacement (£95)
A bonded OLED panel under Ceramic Shield glass, replaced as a single assembly. Ceramic Shield genuinely did improve drop resistance on this generation, but it made no difference to scratch resistance and none at all to what happens when a phone lands on a hard edge.
- Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
- Unresponsive regions where touch no longer registers
- Green or pink vertical lines following a drop
- Dark bleeding spreading across the panel over days
- Ghost touch inputs occurring unprompted
The flat edges introduced with this generation are worth a word. They look sharp and feel good in the hand, but they concentrate impact force into a much smaller area than the curved edges of the 11 and earlier. That is why 12 series screens tend to crack from a single corner rather than shattering broadly.
Check whether the phone still rings and vibrates with a dark screen, since a dislodged display connector is far cheaper than a panel and we test for it first. For faults with no impact, read phone screen flickering. Our iPhone screen repair page covers the process.
Battery Replacement (£65)
At five years old, essentially every 12 Pro Max needs one. These handsets are almost always well past 80 percent capacity by now, and the difference a new cell makes on a phone this age is dramatic.
- Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
- Sudden shutdowns with charge still on the meter, worse in cold weather
- Charge dropping in jumps rather than smoothly
- The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge
- Warmth during undemanding use
iOS reduces peak performance on batteries in poor health to prevent unexpected shutdowns, so on a phone this age a £65 battery frequently restores responsiveness as well as endurance. People assume five year old phones are simply slow. Often they are simply tired. Rule out software first with our guide on why a phone battery drains so fast, and see iPhone battery replacement for pricing.
Back Glass Replacement (£65)
Bonded rear glass with the MagSafe magnet array sitting directly beneath it, removed with a laser separator. That magnet ring is exactly why this repair needs the right equipment: heat and prying tools damage it, and a phone that no longer holds a MagSafe charger has lost a feature you paid for.
- Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
- The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
- MagSafe accessories stop attaching properly
- Wireless charging becomes intermittent
After five years the adhesive has fully cured, which makes clean removal harder than on a newer handset rather than easier. See iPhone back glass repair for the method, and the cracked back glass guide for why home kits fail.
Charging Repair (£59)
Lightning generation, and after five years these ports have taken thousands of insertions. The internal contacts wear, so the cable still clicks in and holds firmly while the electrical connection has become unreliable. Charging that works when you press or angle the cable and stops when you release it is the classic symptom.
Before that, expect five years of compacted lint packed into the socket. On phones this old it is frequently the entire problem. We clean and test before quoting a port. Try another cable and mains plug, then read why a phone will not charge. Our iPhone charging port repair page explains replacement.
Camera Repair (£65)
The 12 Pro Max carried a larger main sensor than the rest of its generation, and the array stands proud of the body, so the outer lens cover takes the impact when the phone lands face up.
- Cracked lens cover with the module beneath undamaged
- Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
- Rattling or grinding as optical stabilisation fails
- Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
- Telephoto or ultra-wide dead while the main lens works
Cover replacement is much cheaper than a module and we always establish which you need. Where nothing was dropped, phone camera not working covers the software side.
Face ID and Front Sensor Faults
The TrueDepth array behind the notch drives Face ID, and on five year old handsets we see failures from wear and from liquid ingress owners have long forgotten. Refusing to enrol a new face, failing in low light, or reporting itself unavailable all point there.
Face ID is paired to the logic board at manufacture, so a damaged TrueDepth module cannot be swapped in from another handset and made to work. A torn or disconnected flex cable is repairable. We diagnose which you have before quoting rather than charging you to find out.
Water Damage and Unexplained Faults
Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted, and on a phone this age historic corrosion is common. Our iPhone water damage repair page explains the approach, and phone data recovery is there when the photographs matter more than the phone.
Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful starting points.
Turnaround, Warranty and Booking
In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. Send-back postage is free and Klarna is available at checkout.
All eligible repairs carry a 12 month warranty on parts and labour whatever the age of the phone. Faults relating to our work are put right at no cost. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.

iPhone 12 Pro Max Repair - FAQs & Answes
My iPhone 12 Pro Max screen has black lines and touch issues - can it be fixed?
Yes, black lines, flickering, or unresponsive touch are clear signs of screen damage. This can happen due to a hard drop, internal display failure, or liquid exposure. A full screen replacement will restore your display’s functionality, ensuring smooth touch response and vibrant visuals.
My battery health is below 80% - how do I know if I need a battery replacement?
When your battery health drops below 80%, your iPhone may feel slower, drain quickly, overheat, or shut down unexpectedly. A fresh battery will bring your phone back to its original battery life and performance, so you don’t have to charge it as often.
My iPhone 12 Pro Max has a green tint on the display - can this be repaired?
Yes, the green tint issue is common in OLED displays and can happen due to a faulty display panel or a software bug. If resetting your phone doesn’t fix it, a screen replacement is the best solution to restore accurate colors.
My Face ID stopped working after a drop - can this be repaired?
Face ID issues are usually caused by damage to the front camera sensors or internal wiring. We can diagnose the issue and repair it without affecting other functions. If the Face ID module is damaged, it may need a replacement, which we can do using professional repair techniques.
My iPhone 12 Pro Max won’t charge - how do I know if it’s the port or battery?
If your iPhone doesn’t charge, the issue could be a dirty charging port, a faulty cable, or a worn-out battery. Try cleaning the port with a soft brush or compressed air. If that doesn’t work, we offer charging port repairs and battery replacements to fix the issue.
The back of my iPhone 12 Pro Max is cracked - can it be replaced without affecting the phone?
Yes! The glass back can be replaced without interfering with your phone’s performance, camera, or wireless charging. We use a laser machine to carefully remove the broken glass and install a brand-new back panel, making your iPhone look as good as new.
My iPhone 12 Pro Max randomly shuts down - what’s causing this?
If your iPhone shuts down unexpectedly, it could be due to an aging battery, overheating, or a motherboard issue. We can run a full diagnostic test to find the exact cause and provide the necessary repair.
Can I send my iPhone 12 Pro Max for repair by mail?
Yes! We provide a mail-in repair service across the UK, offering secure, tracked delivery and free return shipping. Just book your repair online, send your phone to us, and we’ll fix it quickly before sending it back.
Do your repairs come with a warranty?
Yes, all our iPhone 12 Pro Max repairs include a 12-month warranty, covering parts and labor. If you experience any issues related to our repair, we’ll fix it free of charge within the warranty period.
