iPhone 12 Pro Repairs: LiDAR, Flat Edges and What Breaks

The 12 Pro was the compact flagship of its year and it introduced something none of its siblings had: a LiDAR scanner sitting alongside the rear cameras. Five years on it remains a capable phone, and with a screen at £75 and a battery at £59, it is inexpensive to keep in service.

The flat-edged design that returned with this generation looks superb and is genuinely nicer to hold. It is also, in our experience, harder on screens than the curved edges it replaced, because an impact concentrates into a much smaller contact area.

All work is carried out at our Essex repair centre with a twelve month warranty.

Screen Replacement (£75)

A bonded OLED panel beneath Ceramic Shield glass, replaced as a complete assembly. Ceramic Shield improved drop resistance over the 11 series, but it never improved scratch resistance, and it does little when a phone lands squarely on a flat edge.

• Cracks radiating from a single corner, typical of flat-edged phones
• Dead zones where the touchscreen ignores input
• Green or pink vertical lines after a drop
• Black patches bleeding outwards over several days
• Ghost touches happening with nobody holding the phone

Check whether the phone still rings and vibrates with a dark screen, since a dislodged display connector is far cheaper to put right than a panel. We test for that before quoting. For screen faults with no impact behind them, read phone screen flickering.

Battery Replacement (£59)

The 12 Pro packed flagship hardware into a compact body, which meant a battery that was never generous to begin with. Five years of charge cycles later, this is the repair almost every one of them needs, and at £59 it is the cheapest way by far to make the phone properly usable again.

• Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
• Not lasting the working day when it once managed
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, worse in cold weather
• Charge dropping in steps rather than smoothly
• The handset feeling sluggish as well as short on charge

That final symptom is worth understanding. iOS throttles peak performance on batteries in poor health to prevent shutdowns, so people conclude their five year old phone has simply got slow. Back Glass Replacement (£59)

Bonded rear glass with the MagSafe magnet array directly underneath, removed using a laser separator. Damaging that magnet ring during removal costs you MagSafe entirely, which is why this job is not one for heat and prying tools.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses and LiDAR window from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• MagSafe accessories stop attaching correctly
• Wireless charging becomes unreliable

Charging Repair (£59)

Lightning port, five years of daily use. The internal contacts wear down, so the cable still clicks in and feels perfectly secure while the electrical connection becomes unreliable. Charging that works when you press the cable and stops the moment you let go is the giveaway.

Before assuming that, expect years of compacted lint in the socket, which on phones this age is often the whole story. We clean and test before quoting anything. Camera and LiDAR Repair (£59)

The LiDAR scanner is what separates the 12 Pro from the standard 12, and it is worth knowing that it sits in the same housing as the cameras. A hard impact to the rear array can take out LiDAR without obviously affecting photography, and the symptoms are subtle: portrait mode struggling in low light, or augmented reality apps failing to map a room properly.

• Cracked lens cover with the module beneath undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Rattling or grinding as optical stabilisation fails
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Portrait mode or AR apps behaving oddly after an impact

Face ID and Front Sensor Faults

The TrueDepth array behind the notch drives Face ID, and on handsets this age failures come from accumulated wear and from liquid ingress owners have forgotten about. Refusing to enrol a new face, failing repeatedly in dim light, or reporting itself unavailable all point that way.

Face ID is paired to the logic board at manufacture, so a damaged TrueDepth module cannot be replaced with one from another handset and made to work. A torn or disconnected flex cable is repairable. We establish which you have before quoting.

Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone within two to three working days. Every eligible repair includes a 12 month warranty on parts and labour regardless of the phone’s age. Faults relating to our work are put right at no cost. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
