The reason is part volumes, not quality or margin. A-series Pixels sell in smaller numbers in the UK than the flagship models, so the panels are sourced in lower quantities and cost more per unit. Exactly the same thing happens with car parts, where a lower volume trim can be dearer to supply than the mainstream version.

It is worth knowing because the saving you made buying an A-series Pixel does not always carry through to repair costs. On the newer Pixel 9a it does, with a £159 screen against £199 for the Pixel 9. On the 6a generation it runs the other way.

Why is my Pixel 6a fingerprint reader unreliable?

Usually nothing is broken. The Pixel 6 generation as a whole used under-display fingerprint sensors that were widely reported as slower and less consistent than the readers on later Pixels.

Before assuming a fault, try these, all of which are free:

• Delete your saved fingerprints and re-register them from scratch
• Register the same finger twice, which genuinely helps on this generation
• Remove any screen protector and test, because thick ones interfere with the sensor
• Make sure the phone is fully updated
• Press slightly longer and flatter than you would on a newer phone

If the reader has stopped working entirely rather than being merely slow, that is worth diagnosing. Note also that a cracked screen frequently takes the fingerprint sensor with it, because the sensor sits within the display assembly, so one repair fixes both.

Why is my Google Pixel 6a not charging?
