Galaxy S9 Plus Repairs from £49

The S9 Plus is now a genuinely old phone, and we will treat you as an adult about that. It no longer receives Android updates, some apps have dropped support, and its value is modest. What it still does perfectly well is make calls, send messages, take good photographs and act as a reliable second handset.

On a phone of this age this is almost always the only repair worth doing, and it is the one that transforms it. Original S9 Plus cells are far past their service life by now.

• Capacity far below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• Lasting an hour or two on ordinary use
• Shutting down without warning, especially in cold weather
• Charge collapsing in large steps, sometimes 30 or 40 percent at once

Galaxy S9 Plus Screen Replacement (£99)

A curved AMOLED panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly. The S9 generation used the Infinity Display with pronounced curves down both long edges, and those curves are the weak point: a side impact lands on active display rather than on the frame.

• Cracks running along or from a curved edge
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• Vertical green, pink or white lines down the panel
• Black or discoloured patches spreading over days
• Ghost touches, which curved panels are particularly prone to after damage

Curved panels of this era also suffer badly from screen burn, where a faint permanent ghost of the status bar or navigation buttons becomes visible on plain backgrounds. That is not damage and cannot be repaired, only replaced, and plenty of owners live with it quite happily. Galaxy S9 Plus Rear Fingerprint Sensor

Unlike later Galaxies, the S9 Plus has its fingerprint reader on the back below the camera rather than under the display. That is genuinely good news for repair: a screen replacement has no effect on it, and a failed sensor is a separate, cheaper job than anything involving the panel.

It also means the common in-display problems simply do not apply here. No screen protector will ever stop this reader working. If yours has stopped responding, it is the sensor or its flex cable, and we quote it individually after a diagnostic.

Bonded rear glass removed with a laser separator. On a phone this age the adhesive has fully cured, which makes clean removal harder rather than easier.

On a phone this old expect a USB-C socket thoroughly packed with years of compacted lint, and it is frequently the entire problem. Clearing it is not a chargeable repair here.

The S9 generation introduced a variable aperture main camera, which physically switches between two aperture settings depending on light. It is a moving mechanism, and moving mechanisms wear.

• Cracked lens cover with the module beneath undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• A faint click from the aperture mechanism, or images inconsistently exposed
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Rattling from a failed stabilisation assembly

Water Damage and Whether It Is Worth Repairing

The S9 Plus has a water resistance rating, but on a phone this old those seals are many years past their best and should be treated as gone. Ratings also cover fresh water rather than sea water.

Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted, and on a handset of this age the honest answer is often that repair does not add up.
