Galaxy Z Fold 7 Repairs, Including the Inner Folding Display

Folding phones are the hardest mainstream repair there is, and most shops will not touch the inner display. We do, and we do it in-house at our Essex repair centre rather than posting your handset to a third party and hoping.

Being upfront about cost: the inner folding screen is £599. That is a lot, and we would rather explain why than have you assume we are chancing it. The inner panel is not glass in the way a normal phone screen is glass. It is a stack of ultra-thin flexible layers that has to survive being folded tens of thousands of times, it is manufactured in far smaller volumes than conventional panels, and the part itself accounts for most of that figure. The outer cover screen, which is conventional glass, is £229 by comparison.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 Inner Screen Replacement (£599)

The inner display is the most delicate component in any phone on sale. It has no toughened glass over it, because toughened glass cannot fold. What protects it is a thin polymer layer, and that layer is soft enough to be marked by a fingernail.

• A vertical line appearing along or near the crease, which usually spreads
• A dead or flickering band down one half of the panel
• Black bleeding or ink-like patches after something pressed on the screen
• Touch working on one half of the display but not the other
• A visible dent, puncture or bubble under the surface layer

Two things worth knowing before anything else. First, the screen protector on the inner display is not an accessory. It is applied at the factory and forms part of the display assembly, and peeling it off is one of the most common ways owners destroy their own inner screen. If yours is lifting at the edges, leave it alone and bring it in.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 Outer Screen Replacement (£229)

The cover display is conventional toughened glass bonded to an OLED panel, so it behaves like any other phone screen and is replaced as one assembly. Because it is the screen you use for notifications, quick tasks and the camera viewfinder, it takes most of the everyday knocks.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead areas where touch no longer registers
• Coloured lines running down the panel
• Black patches spreading over several days
• Ghost touches occurring on their own

A cracked outer screen is worth fixing promptly on a folding phone specifically, because loose fragments migrate into the hinge and cause far more expensive damage. If your display is misbehaving with no impact behind it, read phone screen flickering first.

Hinge Damage and Debris: The Real Killer

If you take one thing from this page, take this. The most common cause of a destroyed inner display is not a drop. It is grit.

Sand, crumbs, keys, pocket dust and beach debris work into the hinge mechanism. When the phone closes, that debris is pressed into the back of the inner panel, and a single grain in the wrong place punctures it. The damage looks like an impact, but nothing was ever dropped.

• Never close the phone on anything, however small
• Keep it away from pockets carrying keys or coins
• Be careful on beaches, and coastal areas are worst for it
• If the hinge feels gritty or crunchy when folding, stop and bring it in
• Avoid folding it in freezing conditions, when the polymer layer is most brittle

A gritty hinge cleaned out for a modest fee is vastly cheaper than a £599 display. If yours does not close flush, has developed a gap, or feels rough through its travel, have it looked at now rather than after the panel fails.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 Battery Replacement (£119)

Folding phones carry two separate battery cells, one in each half, which is part of why replacement costs more than on a conventional handset. Both are reached through a full disassembly.

• Capacity dropping noticeably in Settings, Battery and device care
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still showing
• Charge falling in steps rather than smoothly
• The handset warm during light use
• One half of the phone noticeably hotter than the other

That last symptom is specific to folding phones and worth acting on, because it usually means one of the two cells is failing rather than both ageing evenly. Galaxy Z Fold 7 Charging Repair (£99)

Most Folds that will not charge do not need a new port. They need compacted lint clearing from the USB-C connector so the cable seats fully, and we check that before quoting anything.

Genuine port failure means charging that works only at a particular angle, cuts out when the phone moves, a connector that feels loose, or charging that works while data transfer fails. Back Glass (£89) and Camera Repair (£129)

The rear glass is bonded and removed with a laser separator, as on any modern flagship, but on a folding phone there is an added reason to fix it quickly: fragments migrating into the hinge. Our cracked back glass guide explains the process.

Camera faults split between cracked lens covers and failed modules at different costs. Blurred images across all modes, rattling from failed stabilisation, a black or crashing camera app, or one lens working while another does not are the usual signs. Water Damage on a Folding Phone

The Z Fold 7 carries a water resistance rating, but folding phones have always been the exception to the usual advice, because a hinge cannot be sealed the way a solid chassis can. Water resistance is also not dust resistance, and neither survives the phone being dropped.

Conventional repairs on a Fold are usually completed the same day, within one to three hours in store. Inner display and hinge work takes longer because the phone is fully stripped and rebuilt, and we will give you a realistic timescale before starting rather than an optimistic one.
