The A23 5G is a budget phone that punches above its weight, and it is one we see regularly. Screen £85, and rear panel, camera, battery and charging all £49, with diagnostics at £15.

Worth addressing the screen price up front, because it looks odd next to the rest of our list. An A23 panel is £85 while an A33 or A34 is £75, despite those being higher-tier phones. That is not a markup. Panels for budget models are made in shorter production runs and are harder to source at good quality, and we would rather fit a proper part at £85 than a poor one at £60 that fails in six months.

This is the repair that keeps an A23 useful, and at £49 it is easily the best value thing you can do to one.

• Capacity noticeably below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• Not lasting the day where it once managed comfortably
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, worse in cold weather
• Charge dropping in steps rather than smoothly
• The handset warm during light use

Before spending anything, check what is draining it. Settings, then Battery and device care, then Battery will list the apps that used most since the last full charge. Galaxy A23 5G Screen Replacement (£85)

An LCD panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly. The A23 uses LCD rather than the AMOLED found further up the range, and LCD fails differently, which is worth recognising.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• White or bright blotches rather than the black bleeding AMOLED produces
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches occurring with nobody holding the phone

That backlight symptom saves phones from being written off. If your A23 appears completely dead but you can make out the home screen when you shine a torch at it, the handset is working and only the backlight has gone. It is still a screen replacement, but the phone itself is fine and your data is safe. Most charging complaints on budget handsets are compacted lint in the USB-C socket stopping the cable seating, not a failed port. Clearing it is not a chargeable repair here, and on a phone at this price we would rather tell you that than take £49 off you.

The Fingerprint Reader Is in the Power Button

Budget A-series phones put the fingerprint reader in the side-mounted power button rather than under the display, and that is genuinely better news for repair than an in-display sensor.

• A screen replacement has no effect on it whatsoever
• No screen protector can ever interfere with it
• It works with wet or cold fingers better than an in-display reader
• If it fails, it is a separate and cheaper job than anything involving the panel

If yours has stopped responding, try re-registering the fingerprint first, and make sure a thick case is not stopping your thumb reaching the button squarely. Genuine failures are the button assembly or its flex cable and we quote them individually.

The A23 uses a composite rear panel rather than glass, which means it cracks or scuffs rather than shattering, and survives drops that would destroy a glass-backed phone.

The A23 has no water resistance rating, so treat it as completely unsealed. Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted, and on a phone at this price the honest answer is often that repair does not add up.
