Galaxy A21s Repairs from £55

The A21s is a proper budget phone and it sold in serious numbers, largely to people who wanted something dependable rather than impressive. Screen £65, and rear panel, camera, battery and charging all £55, with diagnostics at £15.

At £65 the screen is the cheapest in the whole A-series, which changes the repair conversation entirely. On most phones there is a genuine decision to make. On an A21s, if the handset is otherwise sound, it is rarely worth agonising over.

The A21s shipped with a large battery, which was its main selling point and remains the reason people kept them. When that cell degrades, the one thing the phone was actually good at disappears, and owners feel it sharply.

• Capacity noticeably below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• A phone that comfortably did two days now struggling to reach the evening
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, particularly in cold weather
• Charge dropping in large steps rather than smoothly
• The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge

That last point matters more on a budget handset than on a flagship. The A21s has limited memory, so background apps are constantly unloaded and reloaded, and a tired battery makes that worse still. Galaxy A21s Screen Replacement (£65)

An LCD panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly. The A21s uses LCD rather than AMOLED, which is why the replacement is so inexpensive, and LCD fails in ways worth recognising.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• White or bright blotches rather than the black bleeding AMOLED produces
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches occurring with nobody holding the phone

The backlight symptom rescues more phones than any other piece of advice on this page. If your A21s looks completely dead but you can just make out the home screen when you shine a torch at it, the phone is working perfectly and only the backlight has failed. Your photos and messages are all still there. It is a screen replacement, not a dead handset, and people throw phones away over exactly this. The Fingerprint Reader Is on the Back

The A21s puts its fingerprint sensor on the rear of the phone rather than under the display or in the power button, and that is genuinely good news at repair time.

• A screen replacement has no effect on it whatsoever
• No screen protector can ever interfere with it
• It reads wet or cold fingers better than an in-display sensor
• If it fails, it is a separate and cheaper job than anything involving the panel

If yours has stopped responding, re-register the fingerprint first and check that a thick case is not sitting proud of the sensor. Those two things account for most of the complaints we get. Genuine failures are the sensor or its flex cable and we quote them individually after a diagnostic.

Most charging complaints on budget handsets turn out to be compacted lint in the USB-C socket stopping the cable seating, not a failed port. Clearing it is not a chargeable repair here, and on a phone at this price we would far rather tell you that than take £55.

Genuine failure means charging that works only at one angle, cuts out when the phone is moved, or a connector that feels loose. A composite rear panel rather than glass, which is exactly right for a phone like this. It cracks or scuffs rather than shattering into fragments, and it survives drops that would destroy a glass-backed flagship. A great many A21s handsets are still on their original panels years later.

A square rear camera block with separate lens rings, so damage tends to stay confined to one ring rather than affecting the whole array.

• Cracked lens cover on one lens with the others undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Focus hunting continuously without settling
• The camera app slow to open, which on a phone this size of memory is usually software

Water Damage and Whether to Repair

The A21s has no water resistance rating at all, so treat it as completely unsealed. Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted, and on a phone of this value the honest answer is usually that repair does not add up.

We will say so plainly rather than taking your money to establish it.
