Galaxy A12 Repairs from £49

The A12 was one of the best selling Android phones anywhere, and years later there are still a great many in use. Screen £59, and rear panel, camera, battery and charging all £49.

At this point it is a genuinely old budget phone and we will be honest about that rather than pretending otherwise. It still works as a phone. It is no longer receiving updates. Whether it is worth spending money on depends entirely on what it needs and what you use it for.

What Is Actually Worth Fixing on an A12

Rather than bury this at the bottom, here is our honest view on a phone of this age and value.

• A £49 battery on a sound A12 is worth doing and transforms it
• A £49 charging repair is worth doing, and often it is just lint anyway
• A £59 screen is reasonable if the phone is otherwise fine
• Two or more repairs together starts to approach what a used replacement costs
• Liquid damage on an A12 is rarely economic to repair

If you use it as a second phone, a work phone or a child’s first handset, keeping it going for £49 makes complete sense. If it needs three things at once, we will tell you plainly that you are better off putting the money elsewhere. We would rather lose the job than have you feel we took advantage.

Galaxy A12 Battery Replacement (£49)

This is the repair that brings an A12 back, and usually the only one it needs. Original cells are years past their useful capacity now.

• Capacity noticeably below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• Lasting only a few hours on ordinary use
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, particularly in cold weather
• Charge collapsing in large steps
• The phone feeling very slow as well as short on charge

On an A12 that slowness is frequently storage rather than battery. These phones came with limited space and fill up quickly, and a nearly full handset crawls no matter how healthy the cell is. Galaxy A12 Screen Replacement (£59)

An LCD panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly. LCD fails differently to the AMOLED used higher up the range, and the symptoms are worth recognising.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• White or bright blotches rather than black bleeding
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches occurring with nobody holding the phone

Check the backlight symptom before writing the phone off. If it seems completely dead but you can make out the home screen with a torch, the handset works and only the backlight has failed. All your photos and messages are intact. It is still a screen replacement, but it is not a dead phone, and that distinction matters a great deal when the handset is worth what an A12 is worth. Galaxy A12 Charging Repair (£49)

Most A12s brought to us as charging faults do not need a new port. They need years of compacted lint clearing from the socket, and that is not a chargeable repair here.

Genuine failure means charging that works only at one angle, cuts out when the phone is moved, or a connector that feels loose. Change the cable and mains plug first, because worn cheap cables cause more of these than failed ports do, and people regularly pay for repairs they never needed. Galaxy A12 Rear Panel Replacement (£49)

A textured composite rear panel rather than glass, which is exactly right for a phone like this. It cracks or scuffs rather than shattering, and a great many A12s are still on original panels years later despite hard lives.

• Cracks and deep scuffs rather than spidering across the whole back
• Debris able to reach the camera lenses from behind
• Sharp edges where a panel has split
• Panels lifting at a corner after a hard drop

Separate lens rings set into a square rear block, so damage stays confined to one ring rather than the whole array.

• Cracked lens cover on one lens with the others undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Focus hunting continuously without settling
• The camera app very slow to open, which on an A12 is nearly always memory

Water Damage and Data Recovery

The A12 has no water resistance whatever. Liquid damage on one is rarely economic to repair, and we will tell you that straight rather than charging you to discover it.

What is very often worth doing instead is phone data recovery. A phone this age is frequently carrying years of photographs that were never backed up anywhere, and getting those back matters far more than the handset does.
