The A22 5G is a budget phone that has aged reasonably well, and there are a lot of them about. Screen £85, and rear panel, camera, battery and charging all £49.

Make Sure You Have the 5G, Not the 4G

This matters more on the A22 than almost any phone we handle, so it goes first.

Samsung sold two completely different phones called the A22. The 4G model uses a Super AMOLED display. The 5G model, which this page covers, uses an LCD. They are different panels, different frames and different prices, and they are not interchangeable in either direction.

• Check Settings, then About phone, and read the full model number
• The 4G version has an AMOLED screen with deeper blacks and no backlight
• The 5G version has an LCD screen with a backlight behind it
• The two have different camera layouts and different fingerprint placement
• A quote for one tells you nothing at all about the other

Galaxy A22 5G Battery Replacement (£49)

On an A22 this is nearly always the repair worth doing, and often the only one. These are several years old and original cells are well past their useful capacity.

• Capacity noticeably below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• Not lasting the day where it once managed comfortably
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, worse in cold weather
• Charge dropping in steps rather than smoothly
• The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge

Budget phones have less memory than flagships, so background apps get unloaded and reloaded constantly, and that costs both battery and speed. Galaxy A22 5G Screen Replacement (£85)

An LCD panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly. LCD fails differently to the AMOLED used further up the range, and the symptoms are worth recognising.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• White or bright blotches rather than black bleeding
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches occurring with nobody holding the phone

Check the backlight symptom before assuming the worst. If the phone seems completely dead but you can make out the home screen with a torch shone at it, the handset works and only the backlight has failed. Galaxy A22 5G Charging Repair (£49)

Most charging problems on budget handsets are compacted lint in the USB-C socket rather than a failed port. Clearing it is not a chargeable repair here, and at this price point we would much rather tell you that than take the booking.

The Side-Mounted Fingerprint Reader

The A22 5G puts its fingerprint reader in the power button rather than under the display, which is a real advantage when something goes wrong.

• A screen replacement has no effect on it at all
• No screen protector can interfere with it
• It reads wet and cold fingers better than an in-display sensor
• If it fails it is a separate, cheaper job than anything involving the panel

Before booking, try re-registering the fingerprint and check that a thick case is not preventing your thumb reaching the button squarely. Those two things account for most of the sensor complaints we see on this model.

A composite rear panel rather than glass, which cracks or scuffs rather than shattering into fragments and survives drops that would destroy a glass-backed phone.

• Cracks and deep scuffs rather than spidering across the whole back
• Debris able to reach the camera lenses from behind
• Sharp edges where a panel has split
• Panels lifting at a corner after a hard drop

Separate lens rings set into the rear panel, so damage tends to stay confined to one ring rather than the whole array.

• Cracked lens cover on one lens with the others undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Focus hunting continuously without settling
• The camera app slow to open, which on budget phones is usually software

Water Damage and Whether to Repair

The A22 has no water resistance rating, so treat it as completely unsealed. Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted, and on a phone at this price the honest answer is frequently that repair is not economic.
