The Pixel XL was Google’s first phone under its own name, launched in 2016, and it is the oldest handset in our Pixel range. It still has a headphone socket, a rear fingerprint sensor and an aluminium and glass body, and a surprising number are still switched on.
Is a Google Pixel XL still worth repairing?
We will be straight with you, because on a phone approaching a decade old that matters more than a price list.
The Pixel XL stopped receiving Android updates a long time ago. A great many apps will no longer install on it, banking apps will almost certainly refuse, and it should not be used for anything sensitive online. What it still does perfectly well is make calls, send messages, play music and take photographs.
- A £59 battery on a working Pixel XL is worth doing if you want to keep using it
- A charging fault is worth checking, because it is usually just lint and free to resolve
- A £79 screen is a genuine decision on a phone of this age and value
- Two repairs together does not add up on a Pixel XL
- Liquid damage is not economic to repair
If the phone is a spare, a music player, a camera or a first handset for a child, keeping it going for £59 makes complete sense. If it needs several things at once we will tell you plainly that the money is better spent elsewhere, and help you get the data off instead.
How much is a Google Pixel XL battery replacement?
A Google Pixel XL battery replacement costs £59 at iExpert Repairs. On a phone this old it is nearly always the only repair worth doing, and it is what brings the handset back to something usable.
- Capacity noticeably below where it started, shown under Settings, Battery
- Lasting only an hour or two on ordinary use
- Shutting down without warning, particularly in cold weather
- Charge collapsing in very large steps
- The phone feeling extremely slow as well as short on charge
That last symptom is the one that sends working phones to landfill. A degraded battery causes the system to throttle performance to prevent shutdowns, so the phone feels finished rather than merely tired. Our guide on why a phone battery drains so fast covers what else to check, and our Google Pixel battery replacement page lists pricing.
How much does a Google Pixel XL screen replacement cost?
A Google Pixel XL screen replacement costs £79 at iExpert Repairs. It is an OLED panel bonded beneath toughened glass and replaced as a complete assembly.
- Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
- Dead zones where the touchscreen no longer registers
- Green, pink or white vertical lines down the panel
- Black or discoloured patches spreading over several days
- A faint permanent ghost of the navigation bar, which is screen burn
Screen burn is extremely common on OLED panels approaching a decade old. It is not damage, cannot be repaired, and only a new panel clears it. Plenty of owners live with it quite happily rather than spend £79, and we will say so honestly if that is all yours has. See our Google Pixel screen repair page.
Can you repair the headphone socket on a Pixel XL?
Yes. The Pixel XL has a headphone socket, and after this many years a crackly one is usually just full of pocket lint rather than genuinely broken.
- A socket gone crackly, or quiet on one side
- Plugs that no longer click in securely
- Audio cutting out when the cable is moved
- The phone not detecting headphones being plugged in at all
Try a different pair of headphones first to rule out the cable, then bring it in. Cleaning is not a chargeable repair here, and if it genuinely needs replacing we quote that individually.
Why is my Google Pixel XL not charging?
Most Google Pixel XL handsets that will not charge do not need a new port. On a phone approaching a decade old, expect a USB-C socket completely packed with compacted lint, and clearing that is not a chargeable repair at iExpert Repairs. A genuine Pixel XL charging port repair costs £55.
Change the cable and mains plug first. Worn cheap cables cause more of these faults than broken ports do, and on a phone worth what a Pixel XL is worth today, paying for a port repair you never needed is a genuinely bad outcome. See why a phone will not charge, and our Google Pixel charging repair page.
Does a Pixel XL screen replacement affect the fingerprint reader?
No. The Google Pixel XL has its fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, so a screen replacement cannot affect it and no screen protector can interfere with it. If yours has stopped responding, re-register the fingerprint and check a thick case is not sitting proud of the sensor.
Can you recover data from an old Pixel XL?
Usually, yes, and on a phone this old it is very often the service that actually helps rather than a repair.
Handsets from 2016 predate universal cloud backup, so they are the ones most likely to be carrying photographs that exist nowhere else. If your Pixel XL has stopped working and what you actually want is what is stored on it, say so and we will approach it that way. See our phone data recovery page, and phone water damage repair if liquid is involved.
How long does a Google Pixel XL repair take?
Most Google Pixel XL repairs are completed within one to three hours in store on the same day, and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned by tracked delivery, with most customers receiving the phone within two to three working days. Send-back postage is free and Klarna is available at checkout.
Where can I get a Google Pixel XL repaired?
iExpert Repairs repairs Google Pixel XL handsets at our Essex repair centre and by post for customers across the whole of the United Kingdom. Free send-back delivery is included on every mail-in repair, so wherever you are in the country the phone comes back to you tracked and at no extra cost.
Every eligible repair includes a 12 month warranty on parts and labour. Call 07939 990557 or contact us to book, and see our Essex repair centre page for more about how we work.
We also repair the original Pixel, Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 2, with every model on our Google Pixel repairs page.
Pixel XL Repairs: Is It Still Worth It?
Is a 2016 Pixel XL still safe to use?
For calls, messages, music and photographs, yes. For anything sensitive online, no. The Pixel XL stopped receiving Android security updates a long time ago, so it is no longer being patched. A great many apps will not install on it and banking apps will almost certainly refuse. It makes a perfectly good spare phone, music player or camera, but we would not use it for banking.
Is it worth putting money into a Pixel XL?
A £59 battery is worth it if you want to keep using the phone, and it is usually the only repair needed. Beyond that it becomes hard to justify. Two repairs together does not add up on a handset this old, and liquid damage certainly does not. We will tell you plainly rather than quoting for everything and letting you regret it.
Can you still get parts for a Pixel XL?
Yes, we can still source screens, batteries, cameras and charging ports for the original Pixel XL, which is not true of every phone from 2016. Availability does vary though, so if you are planning a repair it is worth contacting us rather than assuming. Every repair still carries our full 12 month warranty on parts and labour.
What is the permanent shadow on my Pixel XL screen?
Screen burn, and it is almost universal on OLED panels approaching a decade old. A ghost of the navigation bar or status bar becomes permanently visible on plain backgrounds. It cannot be repaired, only replaced. Plenty of Pixel XL owners live with it quite happily rather than spend £79, and we will say so rather than pushing the repair.
Can you get my old photos off a Pixel XL?
Usually, and on a phone this old that is very often what actually matters. Handsets from 2016 predate universal cloud backup, so they are the most likely of any phone to be carrying photographs that exist nowhere else. If your Pixel XL has died and what you want is the contents rather than the phone, tell us and we will approach it that way.
Do you repair phones this old for customers outside Essex?
Yes. We run a nationwide mail-in repair service with free send-back delivery and we take on older handsets that many shops turn away. Post it to us and it returns by tracked delivery once the work is done. A phone from 2016 gets exactly the same 12 month warranty on parts and labour as a current flagship.
