iPhone 6S Plus Repairs: Still Fixable After Ten Years

The 6S Plus is one of the oldest handsets we still repair, and we are happy to keep doing it. Every job on this model is £39, with diagnostics at £15.

Being honest about what you are working with matters more here than on any newer phone. A 6S Plus is a decade old. It stopped receiving new iOS versions years ago, a good number of apps will no longer install on it, and its resale value is minimal. None of that stops it working as a phone, and plenty of people keep one going for calls, messages, music and photographs. If that is your situation, £39 is a sensible thing to spend. If your 6S Plus needs a screen and a battery and a charging port, we will tell you plainly that you are approaching the point where it stops making sense.

Battery Replacement (£39)

We are putting this first because on a phone this age it is almost always the answer. A ten year old lithium cell has essentially nothing left, and the symptoms are severe.

• Maximum capacity far below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
• Lasting an hour or so on ordinary use
• Shutting down without warning, especially in cold weather
• Charge collapsing in huge steps, sometimes 40 or 50 percent at once
• The phone feeling almost unusably slow

That final symptom is the reason working phones get thrown away. The 6S generation is precisely where Apple first introduced performance throttling on degraded batteries, to stop handsets shutting down under load. On a ten year old cell that throttling is dramatic. An enormous number of 6S Plus handsets written off as too slow needed nothing more than a £39 battery. Screen Replacement (£39)

An LCD panel replaced as a complete assembly. The 6S generation introduced 3D Touch, which put a pressure-sensing layer behind the display, and that makes the panel slightly more involved to replace than the plain LCD of the iPhone 6 before it.

• Cracks spreading from the impact point
• Dead areas where touch no longer registers
• White or bright patches rather than black bleeding
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches registering without any input

Home Button and Touch ID

The 6S Plus uses a genuine mechanical home button that physically clicks, unlike the pressure-sensitive pad Apple moved to with the iPhone 7. Mechanically it is more robust, and outright button failure is less common on this generation than on the 7.

Touch ID, however, works the same way it does on every model since. It is cryptographically paired to the logic board at the factory, so if the assembly is damaged a replacement will click and function as a home button but fingerprint recognition cannot be restored. Nobody can restore it, whatever they tell you.

During a screen replacement the assembly has to be transferred from your original panel to the new one. Done carelessly it is destroyed permanently. We transfer it as standard on every 6S Plus we handle.

Rear Housing Repair (£39)

Worth stating clearly, because it causes confusion: the 6S Plus has no back glass. It uses an aluminium unibody rear housing, which is why it cannot charge wirelessly. There is no rear panel to replace on this model.

What we repair is damage to that aluminium housing:

• Dents and deep scuffs from drops onto hard surfaces
• Bending or warping, which large aluminium phones of this era are prone to
• A cracked camera lens cover set into the housing
• Damage around the port and speaker cut-outs

Bending deserves attention on this model specifically. Large, thin aluminium handsets from this period warp under sustained pressure, and once a frame is bent nothing inside seats correctly against it. If yours has spent years in a back pocket, it is worth having looked at.

Charging Repair (£39)

Lightning port with a decade of insertions behind it. The contacts wear away, so the cable still clicks in and holds while the connection has become unreliable. Charging that works when you press or angle the cable and stops when you release it is the classic sign.

Before that, expect a socket completely packed with ten years of lint. On handsets this old it is very often the entire problem, and cleaning it is not a chargeable repair here. Camera Repair (£39)

A single rear lens sitting under cover glass set into the aluminium housing, which keeps this straightforward.

• Cracked lens cover over an otherwise healthy module
• Blurry or soft images after a drop
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Focus hunting continuously without settling
• Rattling from a failed stabilisation assembly

Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

The 6S generation has no water resistance rating at all, so liquid damage tends to be more severe than on later models. On a ten year old handset the honest answer is frequently that repair is not economic, and we will say so rather than taking your money to reach that conclusion. Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days.
