iPhone 8 Plus Repairs: Home Button, Glass Back, Awkward Combination

The 8 Plus was the last large iPhone with a home button, and it sits in an odd technical position. It kept the Touch ID design of everything before it while adding the glass back needed for wireless charging. That combination makes it one of the more interesting handsets to repair, and one where the wrong approach causes permanent damage.

Eight years on, a screen is £49 and everything else is £45. For a phone still doing a job, that is worth spending.

Home Button and Touch ID: Read This Before Anything Else

This is the most important section on the page, and it is where cheap repairs cause damage that cannot be undone.

Touch ID is cryptographically paired to the logic board at the factory. If the home button assembly is damaged, a replacement will work as a home button but fingerprint recognition cannot be restored. There is no workaround. Anyone claiming they can transplant a working Touch ID from another handset is not telling you the truth.

This matters enormously for screen replacements, because the home button assembly has to be transferred from your original screen onto the new one. It does not come with the replacement panel. A rushed or careless screen job destroys Touch ID permanently, and we regularly see 8 Plus handsets that arrived that way from somewhere else. We transfer it as a matter of course, and if your button is already damaged in a way that puts it at risk, you will hear that from us before we start rather than afterwards.

Screen Replacement (£49)

The 8 Plus uses an LCD panel, which is why replacement is inexpensive. LCD fails differently to the OLED used on the X of the same year.

• Cracks spreading from the impact point
• Dead areas where touch no longer registers
• White or bright blotches rather than black bleeding
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches registering without any input

Battery Replacement (£45)

Eight years of charge cycles means every original 8 Plus battery is well past its service life. If yours has never been changed, this is why the phone behaves the way it does.

• Maximum capacity well below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
• Lasting only a few hours on light use
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, worse in cold weather
• Charge dropping in very large steps
• The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge

On a handset this age the performance improvement is often more striking than the battery life improvement, because iOS throttles the processor heavily when battery health is poor. Back Glass Replacement (£45)

The 8 Plus has a reputation among repair technicians, and it is deserved. Its rear glass is bonded to the frame with unusually strong adhesive and there is no straightforward way to separate it without a laser. A great many shops simply decline this job on an 8 or 8 Plus, which is why quotes for it vary so wildly when you can get one at all.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• Wireless charging becomes unreliable or stops entirely
• Sharp edges are a genuine nuisance in daily use

Charging Repair (£45)

Lightning port, eight years of insertions. The contacts wear, so the cable clicks in and feels secure while the connection has become unreliable. Charging that works when you press the cable and stops when you release it is the giveaway.

On a phone this old expect a socket genuinely full of compacted lint, which is frequently the whole problem and is not a £45 repair. We clean and test before quoting anything. Camera Repair (£45)

A horizontal dual lens arrangement, and the array sits proud of the body so the outer lens cover takes the impact when the phone lands face up.

• Cracked lens cover with the modules beneath undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Rattling or grinding as optical stabilisation fails
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Telephoto dead while the main lens works normally

Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted blind, and after eight years historic corrosion is very common. On a handset of this value we will tell you frankly if the repair is uneconomic rather than taking your money to establish that. Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.

Turnaround, Warranty and Booking

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. All eligible repairs carry a 12 month warranty on parts and labour whatever the age of the handset. Faults relating to our work are put right at no cost. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
