iPhone SE 2nd Gen Repairs: The Workhorse Phone
The second generation SE turns up in our workshop constantly, and rarely as somebody’s pride and joy. These are work phones, second phones, first phones for children, and handsets bought precisely because they were cheap and had a home button. They get used hard, and they get repaired rather than replaced.
That suits them. A screen is £55 and a battery £49. For a phone doing a practical job, those numbers make repair the obvious choice every time.
All work is carried out at our Essex repair centre with a twelve month warranty.
Screen Replacement (£55)
The SE uses an LCD panel in a body derived from the iPhone 8, which keeps replacement costs low. LCD fails differently to OLED and the symptoms are worth knowing.
- Cracks spreading from the impact point
- Dead areas where touch no longer registers
- White or bright patches rather than black bleeding
- Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
- Ghost touches registering without any input
If your SE looks completely dead but you can make out the screen with a bright light shone at it, the backlight has failed rather than the phone. Still a screen replacement, but not a write-off. For faults with no drop involved, read phone screen flickering. Our iPhone screen repair page covers the process.
Home Button and Touch ID: Read This First
This is the single most important thing to understand about repairing an SE, and it is where careless repairs cause permanent damage.
Touch ID is cryptographically paired to the logic board at the factory. If the home button assembly is damaged, a replacement can be fitted and it will work as a home button, but fingerprint recognition cannot be restored. Ever. There is no workaround and anyone telling you otherwise is not being straight with you.
This matters for screen replacements too, because the home button assembly must be carefully transferred from your original screen onto the new one. It is not supplied with the replacement panel. A rushed screen job destroys Touch ID permanently, and we have repaired plenty of SEs that arrived that way after being done elsewhere. We transfer it as standard, and if your button is already damaged in a way that puts it at risk we will tell you before we start rather than after.
Battery Replacement (£49)
Small body, small battery, and a processor considerably more capable than the chassis suggests. The SE was never a long-lasting phone and six years of charge cycles have not helped.
- Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
- Dead by mid-afternoon on ordinary use
- Sudden shutdowns with charge apparently remaining
- Charge dropping in steps rather than smoothly
- The phone feeling sluggish as well as short on charge
iOS throttles peak performance on batteries in poor health, so a £49 battery frequently restores speed as well as endurance. On a phone used for work that alone is usually worth it. Rule out software first with our guide on why a phone battery drains so fast, and see iPhone battery replacement for pricing.
Back Glass Replacement (£45)
The SE has a glass rear panel, which is what lets it charge wirelessly despite the older styling. It is bonded to the frame and removed with a laser separator like any other glass-backed iPhone.
- Loose fragments scratch the camera lens from behind
- The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
- Wireless charging becomes unreliable or stops entirely
- Sharp edges are a genuine nuisance on a phone used daily
See iPhone back glass repair for the method, and the cracked back glass guide for why DIY kits go wrong.
Charging Repair (£49)
Lightning port. On phones used as heavily as these tend to be, compacted lint is almost always the first thing to check, and clearing it is not a chargeable repair. We clean and test before quoting.
Genuine wear shows as a cable that clicks in and feels secure while charging cuts in and out, or only works held at an angle. Try a different cable and mains plug first, then read why a phone will not charge. Our iPhone charging port repair page explains the replacement.
Camera Repair (£49)
A single rear lens keeps camera repairs on the SE simple and inexpensive compared with the multi-lens arrays on flagship models.
- Blurry or soft images after a drop
- Cracked lens cover over an otherwise healthy module
- Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
- Focus hunting continuously without settling
- Rattling from a failed stabilisation assembly
Where nothing was dropped the cause is often software, and phone camera not working covers those checks.
Water Damage and Unexplained Faults
Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted blind. Phones used in trades and on site come to us with liquid damage more often than most, and we will give you an honest view on whether the repair is worth doing on a handset of this value. Our iPhone water damage repair page explains the approach, and phone data recovery is there when the contents matter more than the phone.
Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.
Turnaround, Warranty and Booking
In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait, which matters if the phone is one you work from. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. Send-back postage is free and Klarna is available at checkout.
Every eligible repair includes a 12 month warranty on parts and labour whatever the age of the handset. Faults relating to our work are put right at no cost. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
Book online through our Essex repair centre page, call 07939 990557, or contact us.
We also repair the iPhone SE 3rd Gen, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 11, with the full range on our iPhone repairs page.
iPhone SE (2nd Gen) Repair – FAQs & Answers
My iPhone SE (2nd Gen) screen is cracked, but the touch still works. Should I replace it?
Yes! Even if your screen still responds, cracks can spread further and expose your phone to dust and moisture. A screen replacement restores clarity and touch accuracy, preventing long-term damage.
My iPhone SE (2nd Gen) battery dies too quickly - can it be fixed?
Yes! Over time, batteries lose their ability to hold a charge. If your iPhone SE drains faster than usual or shuts off unexpectedly, a battery replacement brings back full battery life, so you don’t need to carry a charger everywhere.
My iPhone SE won’t turn on. What could be wrong?
There could be several reasons, including a dead battery, faulty power button, or internal board damage. We offer comprehensive diagnostics to find the issue and provide an expert repair solution.

Yes! The iPhone SE (2nd Gen) has a glass back, and if it’s cracked, it can affect wireless charging. Our back glass replacement service restores the original look and functionality of your phone.

This could be a software issue, battery problem, or logic board fault. We run a full diagnostic check to find the cause and provide the best repair solution.
My iPhone SE speakers sound distorted. Can they be fixed?
Yes! If your speakers sound muffled, low, or crackly, they may be blocked by dust or water-damaged. We offer professional speaker cleaning and replacements to restore clear audio.
