iPhone SE 3rd Gen Repairs: The Home Button Holdout

The third generation SE is the phone people buy when they do not want a modern iPhone. It keeps the home button, keeps Touch ID, keeps a size you can use one-handed, and does it with a processor that is far newer than the body suggests. Owners of these tend to be very deliberate about their choice, and they keep them for a long time.

That makes repair the sensible route almost every time. A screen is £59 and a battery £55. Nothing currently sold gives you a fingerprint sensor in a home button, so replacing an SE with something new means giving up the reason you bought it.

All work is carried out at our Essex repair centre with a twelve month warranty.

Screen Replacement (£59)

The SE uses an LCD rather than the OLED panels fitted to the flagship range, which is why the replacement is inexpensive. LCD screens fail differently to OLED, and the symptoms are worth knowing.

  • Cracks spreading from the impact point
  • Dead areas where touch no longer registers
  • White or bright patches rather than the black bleeding OLED produces
  • Backlight failure, leaving a very faint image visible at an angle
  • Ghost touches registering without any input

That fourth symptom is specific to LCD. If your SE screen appears completely black but you can just make out the image under a bright light, the backlight has failed rather than the whole display, and it is still a screen replacement. For faults with no drop behind them, read phone screen flickering.

Our iPhone screen repair page covers the process across every model.

Home Button and Touch ID

This is the most important thing to understand about repairing an SE, and plenty of shops will not tell you. Touch ID is cryptographically paired to the logic board at manufacture. If the home button assembly is damaged, a replacement can be fitted so the button works mechanically as a home button, but fingerprint recognition cannot be restored. There is no workaround, and anyone claiming otherwise is not being straight with you.

This matters when a screen is replaced too, because the home button assembly must be transferred across from your original screen rather than supplied with the new one. Done carelessly, a screen replacement destroys Touch ID permanently. We transfer it as a matter of course, and we will tell you before we start if your button is already damaged in a way that puts it at risk.

Battery Replacement (£55)

Small phones carry small batteries, and the SE has always asked a lot of its cell. Combine that with a modern processor in an older body and you have a handset where battery replacement is the single most effective repair available.

  • Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
  • Not making it through the day when it once just about did
  • Sudden shutdowns with charge apparently remaining
  • Charge dropping in steps rather than smoothly
  • The handset feeling sluggish as well as short on charge

That last one matters. iOS throttles peak performance on batteries in poor health to prevent shutdowns, so a £55 battery often restores speed as well as endurance. Rule out software first with our guide on why a phone battery drains so fast, and see iPhone battery replacement for pricing.

Back Glass Replacement (£59)

The SE has a glass rear panel, which is what allows it to charge wirelessly despite the older styling. It is bonded to the frame and removed with a laser separator like any other glass-backed iPhone.

  • Loose fragments scratch the camera lens from behind
  • The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
  • Wireless charging becomes unreliable or stops entirely
  • Resale value drops noticeably

See iPhone back glass repair for the method, and the cracked back glass guide for why DIY kits go wrong.

Charging Repair (£49)

Lightning port, and the usual caveat applies before you pay for anything: compacted lint stopping the cable seating is the most common cause of an SE that will not charge. We clean and test first.

Genuine wear shows as a cable that clicks in and feels secure while charging cuts in and out, or works only when held at an angle. Try a different cable and mains plug, then read why a phone will not charge. Our iPhone charging port repair page explains the replacement.

Camera Repair (£49)

The SE uses a single rear lens, which keeps camera repairs simple and cheap compared with the multi-lens arrays on flagship models.

  • Blurry or soft images after a drop
  • Cracked lens cover over an otherwise healthy module
  • Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
  • Focus hunting continuously without settling
  • Rattling from a failed stabilisation assembly

Where nothing was dropped the cause is often software, and phone camera not working covers those checks.

Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted blind. Our iPhone water damage repair page explains the approach, and phone data recovery is available when the contents matter more than the handset.

Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.

Turnaround, Warranty and Booking

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. Send-back postage is free and Klarna is available at checkout.

Every eligible repair includes a 12 month warranty on parts and labour. Faults relating to our work are put right at no cost. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
