Galaxy Note 8 Repairs from £49

The Note 8 mattered more than its spec sheet suggests. It was the phone that brought the Note line back after the Note 7 was recalled and discontinued, and Samsung had a great deal riding on getting it right. It was also the first Samsung with a dual rear camera.

It is now an old phone and we will be straight about that: no more Android updates, some apps no longer supported, modest value. Prices reflect it, with screen £119, camera £59, battery £58, back glass £55 and charging £49.

Galaxy Note 8 S Pen and Silo Repairs

The S Pen is why you own a Note, and on this generation it is a purely passive stylus with no battery or Bluetooth. That simplifies diagnosis considerably: if the pen will not write, it is the pen tip, the digitiser in the display, or the silo detection switch, and nothing else.

• The pen no longer registering on screen at all
• The pen failing to eject, or sitting loose in the silo
• The phone no longer detecting the pen being removed
• Pressure sensitivity gone, so every stroke draws the same weight
• Writing working on part of the screen but not all of it

That last symptom usually means digitiser damage within the display assembly rather than anything wrong with the pen. Bring the pen in with the phone so we can test both, and silo work is quoted individually after a diagnostic.

Galaxy Note 8 Battery Replacement (£58)

On a phone this old this is nearly always the only repair worth doing, and it is the one that makes it usable again. Original cells are the best part of a decade past their service life.

• Capacity far below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• Lasting an hour or two on ordinary use
• Shutting down without warning, especially in cold weather
• Charge collapsing in huge steps
• The phone feeling very slow as well as short on charge

A degraded battery causes the system to throttle performance to prevent shutdowns, so the handset feels finished rather than merely tired. A £58 cell often restores both. Galaxy Note 8 Screen Replacement (£119)

A large curved AMOLED panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly. The Note 8 used the deeply curved Infinity Display of its era, which wraps a long way around both long edges, so a side impact lands on active display with no frame to absorb it.

• Cracks running along or from a curved edge
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• Vertical green, pink or white lines down the panel
• A faint permanent ghost of the status bar or navigation buttons
• The S Pen failing across part of the screen after an impact

Screen burn is very common at this age. It is not damage, cannot be repaired and only a new panel clears it, and many owners live with it rather than spend £119. The Fingerprint Sensor Beside the Camera

The Note 8 is the model that produced the most complained-about design decision of its generation. The fingerprint reader sits on the back directly beside the camera lens rather than below it, so owners have spent years smearing the lens while reaching for the sensor.

If your Note 8 takes hazy, foggy or low contrast photographs, clean the lens properly with a microfibre cloth before assuming anything is broken. It is the most common camera complaint we get on this model and it costs nothing to rule out. Samsung moved the sensor below the camera on the Note 9 precisely because of this.

Galaxy Note 8 Camera Repair (£59)

A horizontal dual rear array, the first Samsung fitted with two rear lenses. Clean the lens first, for the reason above.

• Cracked lens cover with the modules beneath undamaged
• Blurry or hazy images, which is very often just a smeared lens
• Rattling or grinding as optical stabilisation fails
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• The telephoto lens dead while the main lens works

Galaxy Note 8 Back Glass Replacement (£55)

Bonded rear glass removed with a laser separator. On a phone this old the adhesive has fully cured, making clean removal harder rather than easier.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• Wireless charging becomes unreliable
• Sharp edges are a genuine nuisance in daily use

Galaxy Note 8 Charging Repair (£49)

On a phone approaching a decade old, expect a USB-C socket completely packed with compacted lint. It is very often the entire problem rather than a failed port, and clearing it is not a chargeable repair here.

Water Damage and Whether It Is Worth Repairing

The Note 8 has a water resistance rating, but the S Pen silo is a weak point on any Note and on a handset this old the seals should be treated as long gone. Ratings also cover fresh water rather than sea water.

Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted, and on a phone of this age the honest answer is usually that repair does not add up.
