The Note 9 is a phone people keep. It carried the biggest battery Samsung had fitted at that point, it kept the headphone socket that the Note 10 dropped, and it introduced the Bluetooth S Pen. Plenty are still in daily use years on.

Galaxy Note 9 S Pen and Silo Repairs

The Note 9 was the first Note whose S Pen did more than write. Samsung added a supercapacitor and Bluetooth so the pen could act as a remote shutter and presentation clicker, and that split the pen into two separate systems worth understanding.

• The pen no longer registering on screen at all
• The pen writing normally but the remote button doing nothing
• The pen failing to eject, or sitting loose in the silo
• The phone no longer detecting the pen being removed
• Pressure sensitivity gone, so every stroke draws the same weight

That second symptom is the one people misdiagnose. Writing is read by the digitiser in the display and needs no power at all. The remote button runs off the pen’s own charge, which tops up in about forty seconds in the silo and only lasts around half an hour. So a pen that writes perfectly but will not act as a shutter is almost always just flat, or has lost its Bluetooth pairing. Leave it in the silo for a minute and try again before booking anything. Silo faults are quoted individually after a diagnostic, and bring the pen in with the phone.

Galaxy Note 9 Screen Replacement (£125)

A large curved AMOLED panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly. The S Pen digitiser forms part of that assembly, which is why a cracked screen sometimes takes pen input with it even where finger touch still works.

• Cracks running along or from a curved edge
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• Vertical green, pink or white lines down the panel
• Black or discoloured patches spreading over days
• A faint permanent ghost of the status bar or navigation buttons

Screen burn is common on AMOLED panels this old. It is not damage, cannot be repaired and only a new panel clears it, and plenty of owners live with it rather than spend £125. We will say so honestly if that is all yours has. The vertical green line is a different matter, a known Galaxy AMOLED hardware failure that appears with no impact and widens over weeks. Galaxy Note 9 Battery Replacement (£59)

The Note 9 was praised for endurance when new, which makes the decline feel sharper now. On a phone of this age this is the repair that decides whether it stays usable.

• Capacity far below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• Lasting a few hours where it once comfortably managed a day and more
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, especially in cold weather
• Charge collapsing in large steps
• The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge

The Fingerprint Sensor Moved on the Note 9

Samsung moved the rear fingerprint reader from beside the camera on the Note 8 to below it on the Note 9, which fixed the most complained-about design flaw of the previous generation. Owners stopped smearing the lens every time they unlocked the phone.

It also means the sensor is completely independent of the display. A screen replacement has no effect on it, and no screen protector can interfere with it. If yours has stopped responding, it is the sensor or its flex cable, quoted individually.

Galaxy Note 9 Back Glass Replacement (£59)

Bonded rear glass removed with a laser separator. On a phone this age the adhesive has fully cured, which makes clean removal harder rather than easier.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• Wireless charging becomes unreliable
• Sharp edges are a genuine nuisance in daily use

Galaxy Note 9 Charging Repair (£55)

On a phone this old expect a USB-C socket thoroughly packed with compacted lint, which is frequently the entire problem. Clearing it is not a chargeable repair here.

Galaxy Note 9 Camera Repair (£59)

A horizontal dual rear array with the fingerprint sensor below it. The Note 9 also used the variable aperture main camera introduced on the S9, which physically switches between two settings depending on light and is a moving mechanism that can wear.

• Cracked lens cover with the modules beneath undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Images inconsistently exposed, or a faint click from the aperture mechanism
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Rattling from a failed stabilisation assembly

Water Damage and Whether It Is Worth Repairing

The Note 9 has a water resistance rating, but the S Pen silo is a genuine weak point on any Note and on a handset this old the seals should be treated as gone. Ratings also cover fresh water rather than sea water.

Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted, and on a phone of this age the honest answer is often that repair does not add up.
