The A04e is about as basic as Samsung phones get, and every repair on it costs £49. Screen, rear panel, camera, battery, charging: all the same price, with diagnostics at £15.

That flat pricing makes the arithmetic unusually simple, and it also makes one thing obvious. At £49 a screen replacement costs close to what the phone itself is worth second hand. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and this page is written on that basis.

Being Honest About Repairing an A04e

On most phones we tell people repair beats replacement. On an A04e it depends entirely on what has gone wrong, and here is our genuine view.

• A £49 battery on an otherwise sound A04e is worth doing, and transforms it
• A charging fault is worth looking at, because it is very often just lint and costs nothing
• A £49 screen is a judgement call, and depends what a replacement handset would cost you
• Two repairs together does not add up on this model
• Liquid damage is not economic to repair on an A04e

If your A04e needs one thing, bring it in. If it needs several, we will tell you honestly that the money is better spent on a different phone, and we will help you get your photographs off this one instead. Taking £100 for a phone worth £60 is not a business we want.

Galaxy A04e Battery Replacement (£49)

This is the repair worth doing, and usually the only one. It is also the one that makes the phone feel like it did when new.

• Capacity noticeably below where it started, under Settings then Battery and device care
• Lasting only a few hours on ordinary use
• Shutting down without warning, particularly in cold weather
• Charge collapsing in large steps
• The phone feeling very slow as well as short on charge

On an A04e that slowness is nearly always storage and memory rather than the battery. This phone shipped with very little of either, and once it is close to full it will crawl regardless of how healthy the cell is. Galaxy A04e Screen Replacement (£49)

An LCD panel bonded beneath toughened glass, replaced as a complete assembly.

• Cracks radiating from a corner or edge impact
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• White or bright blotches rather than black bleeding
• Backlight failure, leaving a faint image visible under a torch
• Ghost touches occurring with nobody holding the phone

Do the torch test before you decide anything. If the phone seems completely dead but you can just make out the home screen under a bright light, the handset is working perfectly and only the backlight has failed. Every photograph and message on it is intact, and you can still get the data off even if you choose not to repair it. Galaxy A04e Charging Repair (£49)

Start here, because it is the repair most likely to cost you nothing at all. Compacted lint in the charging socket stops the cable seating fully and it accounts for the majority of the A04e handsets brought to us as charging faults. Clearing it is not a chargeable repair.

After that, change the cable and the mains plug. Cheap cables wear out and on phones at this price people regularly pay for port repairs when a replacement cable would have done it. Genuine failure means charging that works only at one angle, cuts out when the phone is moved, or a connector that feels loose. Galaxy A04e Rear Panel Replacement (£49)

A composite rear panel rather than glass, which is exactly right here. It cracks or scuffs rather than shattering into fragments, and a great many A04e handsets are still on their original panels despite very hard lives.

• Cracks and deep scuffs rather than spidering across the whole back
• Debris able to reach the camera lens from behind
• Sharp edges where a panel has split
• Panels lifting at a corner after a hard drop

A simple rear camera, which keeps this straightforward. Clean the lens before booking, because a smeared lens is behind a good share of the blurry photograph complaints we get on cheap phones.

• Cracked lens cover with the module beneath undamaged
• Blurry images, which is very often just a dirty lens
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Focus hunting continuously without settling
• The camera app very slow to open, which here is nearly always memory

Water Damage and Getting Your Photos Back

The A04e has no water resistance at all. Liquid damage on one is not economic to repair, and we will tell you that immediately rather than charging you a diagnostic to arrive at the same answer.

What is worth doing is phone data recovery. Cheap phones are very often the ones carrying photographs that exist nowhere else, because the people using them are least likely to be paying for cloud backup. In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. Send-back postage is free.

Every eligible repair includes a 12 month warranty on parts and labour. The cheapest phone on our list gets exactly the same twelve months as the most expensive, which we think matters. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
